Protest in Patna after Maid Beaten Up, Strip-Searched and Detained
Patna: March 2, 2008
Hundreds of members of the domestic workers union in Patna on Sunday blocked the New Pataliputra area after a maid was stripped and detained in an apartment following allegations of stealing a gold ring by her employers, officials in Patna said.
As reported, a woman whose name was not released by the police had been working as a maid in a flat in Draupadi Apartments for last four months.
On February 26, when she went for work, her employer Ajit Kumar – a government employee – and his family members accused the maid of stealing a gold ring from the household.
When the maid denied the charges, she was beaten up by Kumar's brother Mukesh, Kumar's wife, and the servant. She was also strip searched and locked in a room.
She was finally released after 9 hours in detention, the police report said.
The situation was finally brought under control after the police filed an FIR in the case and arrested Mukesh Kumar who denies charges of assault, strip-search, and illegal detention.
The police are investigating the case.
