Opposition leaders at Bihar Assembly on Friday continued with the tradition of disrupting Assembly session by shouting anti-government slogans and walking out of the proceedings – this time over the alleged beating of former CPI-ML legislator Mahboob Alam by other prisoners at Bhagalpur Central Jail.

Coming out in support of Alam, the entire opposition including the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), and Bahujan Samaj Party walked out of the Assembly saying the ruling NDA government in Bihar was selectively targeting the opposition leaders and was failing to extend proper respect to its leaders.

Despite assurance by the state Power Minister Vijendra Prasad Yadav of a high-level investigation into the allegations, the opposition leaders continued to disrupt the Assembly proceedings demanding sacking of Bhagalpur Jail officials and protection to all opposition leaders currently serving time in various jails of Bihar.

Alam, a convicted criminal facing charge in over a dozen cases including three murder cases, after evading his arrest for several years was finally nabbed in 2007 and was sent to Katihar Jail where he had a number of rows with his fellow inmates. He was then removed from Katihar Jail and sent to Bhagalpur Jail that remains his current home now, Yadav said.

"Until the culprits of Bhagalpur Jail are brought to justice, we will continue to disrupt the Assembly session", said RJD leader Shakeel Ahmed Khan and CPI-ML leader Arun Kumar.
