Governor R. S. Gavai, during his speech at Patna Women's College on Saturday to mark the International Women's Day, said the girl students had to play a vital role in changing the society that continues to treat the women as second class citizens despite all talks of women empowerment.
"Women have made tremendous sacrifice in nation building and many men owe their success to their wives and mothers. They are asking for 33 percent reservation in the Parliament and state Assemblies but I think they deserve 50 percent stipulation in such places," the Governor said.
Padmashree recipient and noted social activist Sudha Varghese, in her address, said that while the Bihar government had made 50% reservation for women in Panchayat elections, the fact was that too many men married to women mukhias were still running the shows in many Panchayats.
Patna High Court Justice Mridula Mishra enunciated the need for more legal knowledge for women.
"There are many laws favoring women are in place but unfortunately many women are not aware of them. This needs to be changed," Justice Mishra said.
Nisha Jha, the wife of late Education Secretary M. M. Jha, announced a monetary award of Rs. 2,500 and a trophy named after her husband for the topper in B. Ed. Exams.
Among others who spoke on the occasion included the Head of the Political Science department Dr. Nidhi Sinha, Dr. Shefali Rai, Ragini Jha, and college principal Sister Doris De'Souja.
Meanwhile, a number of women's organizations including All India Progressive Women's Association (AIPWA), Bihar State Mahila Congress, Bihar Regional Bank Employees Association, and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Women's Wing, held rallies in Patna to mark the Women's International Day.
