Opposition Furious over the Use of Hindi Phrase

Patna: March 10, 2008

Opposition Furious over the Use of Hindi Phrase. Photo by Shashi UttamOpposition leaders in Bihar Assembly on Monday disrupted the proceedings demanding apology from the state Human Resources Minister Brishan Patel for 'comparing them with buffaloes' and thus smearing their names in the eyes of the public.

Referring to the minister's March 7 usage of old Hindi cliché "Bhains ke aagey been bajaaye, bhains baith paguraye' to describe the opposition's reluctance to appreciate the NDA government's steps taken to put Bihar on the path of development, the opposition leaders said it was an insult to many leaders and an apology was in order from Patel.

After much hullabaloo, the opposition then walked out of the Assembly and took their frustration out in front of cameras and microphones.

Assembly Speaker Uday Narayan Chowdhary, however, turned down the opposition's request to chastise Patel saying the minister did not call anyone 'bhains', instead it was used in a phrase that is not so uncommon in Hindi colloquialism.
