Opposition Protest over Alleged Exploitation of Female Prisoners

Patna: March 12, 2008

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders in Patna on Wednesday continued to disrupt the Assembly session – this time on the alleged sexual exploitations of female inmates at the women's remand home in Patna saying these women were being forced into prostitution and the senior police officials were looking the other way despite having full knowledge of it.

Shouting 'Have some shame, Nitish Kumar', RJD legislator Shyam Rajak led other party leaders into the well while refusing to let the NDA leaders respond to their allegations.

"This is a clear violation of the Assembly decorum and would have long-term negative effect on the functioning of the House," a frustrated Assembly Speaker Uday Narayan Chowdhary said whose requests to maintain decorum in the House were ignored.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar assured the opposition leaders of launching an investigation into the charges saying he has asked the officials to present him all the facts before an enquiry is launched.

Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, however, rejected the protest saying the Opposition had no meaningful topic to discuss so they were disrupting the Assembly just for the sake of disrupting the session.
