Alleged RJD Activist Gunned Down in Patna City

Patna: March 13, 2008

Hundreds of people in Patna on Thursday blocked Ashok Rajpath after the police recovered the body of 30-year old Mohammed Ekram, a presumed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) activist, from Sadiqpur area under Alamganj police station in Patna City.

Demanding immediate arrests of Ekram's killers, an angry mob burnt tires and brought the traffic to a grinding halt on Ashok Rajpath. Only after senior police officials stepped in and gave Rs. 10,000 to the victim's family, the roadblock was removed and traffic restored.

As reported, Ekram left his home on Wednesday after finishing his lunch. Soon 3-4 youths came to his house looking for him. When they did not find him there, they left saying they would be back to talk with him.

Ekram, however, did not return home on Wednesday night. A search was organized on Thursday morning and his bullet-ridden body was found shortly near the Sadiqpur police outpost, officials said.

Efforts are on to identify and arrest the killers, Patna City SDPO Suresh Chowdhary said adding a background check of Ekram was also in process to ascertain his previous run with the law, if any.
