Opposition Protests over Killing of RJD Activist
Patna: March 14, 2008
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders at Bihar Assembly on Friday staged a walk-out in protest against the killing of a party activist in Patna City on late Wednesday night saying the ruling NDA was out to systematically eliminate all opposition leaders in its attempt to maintain its hegemony in the state.
Despite assurance from the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Energy Minister Vijendra Yadav of a full investigation into the killing of Mohammed Ekram, the Opposition leaders disturbed the Assembly proceedings and chanted anti-NDA slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Rs. 10 lakh for the victim's family.
Curiously none of the RJD leaders could explain how and in what capacity Ekram, who has a history of run-ins with the law, was associated with the party.
Meanwhile, RJD president and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav paid a visit to the family of the victim on Friday and announced a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh from the party fund.
"Opposition leaders are not safe under the NDA raj and there is a concerted effort to eliminate all voice of opposition," the Railway Minister said.
