Photo by Dr. Diwakar TejaswiDr. Diwakar Tejaswi, the Medical Director RATNEI, IHO, in Patna on Monday, delivered a keynote address to the state’s top gynecologists at Hotel Sarvodaya on post-HIV/AIDS exposure saying with timely and proper treatment, the chances of acquiring HIV could be reduced by as much as 80%.

The event sponsored by the Indian pharmaceutical firm CIPLA, was attended by noted physicians including Dr. Mrs. Shanti Roy, Dr. Pramila Modi, Dr. Himanshu Roy, Dr. Sarika Roy, Dr. Sangeeta Pankaj, Dr. Prabha Sinha among others.

Dr. Tejaswi stated that with single percutaneous exposure, the chance of acquiring HIV is 0.3% but chance of acquiring Hepatitis B is 30%. If the post-exposure prophylaxis HIV medicines are taken for 28 days, the chances of acquiring HIV is substantially reduced.
