Ministry to be Expanded Soon; Says Nitish Kumar

Patna: March 19, 2008

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who had been under intense pressure from his own political allies to expand the ministry, on Wednesday said that the expansion would come very soon – most likely during the current budget session of the state Assembly.

With only 27 ministers in place since the NDA came into power nearly two and a half years ago, Kumar had been under friendly fire from both his party and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) that has been his Achilles' Heels for last year or so.

Kumar is expected to induct nine more ministers in his cabinet and his choice of ministers could lead to a new set of agony for him as both Janata Dal (U) and the BJP are vying for more prominence in the state government for obvious political reasons.

Both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi currently hold a number of portfolios that are expected to be spread among the new ministers.
