Legislative Council Nominees Elected Unopposed

Patna: March 19, 2008

Following the withdrawal of all independent candidates for Bihar Legislative Council seats, all nominated candidates representing different parties were elected unanimously while voting for the Rajya Sabha seats would be held on March 26.

Amidst some grandstanding, independent Legislative Council hopeful Sayyed Mahmood Ashrafi not only withdrew his application, he also announced his decision to join Janata Dal (U) saying the NDA government was doing a great job in the state and he would be honored to join a team that was working relentlessly to improve the condition of the people of Bihar.

Others who were also elected to the Bihar Legislature unopposed included JD-U candidates Haroon Rasheed, Heera Bind, Satish Kumar, and Ramdhani Singh; Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates Giriraj Singh and Kameshwar Choupal; Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) hopefuls Badshah Prasad Azaad and Tanween Hasan, and Congress nominee Dr. Jyoti.

For the 5 Rajya Sabha seats, six candidates are in the race including Janata Dal (U) party spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari, former state Planning Board Deputy Chairperson N. K. Singh, BJP nominee Dr. C. P. Thakur, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Premchand Gupta, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) hopeful Sabir Ali, and independent candidate Govind Pandey.
