Fire at Kanti Thermal Power Plant; Damage Extensive

Patna: March 25, 2008

Portion of Kanti Thermal Power in Muzaffarpur was severely damaged after a fire broke out on Tuesday evening purportedly due to a spark caused by an electrical glitch near highly inflammable materials and leakage in oil barrels used for power production, the General Manager of the plant P. C. Kumbaj said.

Several fire tenders were at the scene trying to contain the flames from spreading in other parts of the plant and other buildings in the vicinity.

Dark smokes bellowing out of the plant could be seen from miles as hundreds of people from neighboring areas joined hands in an attempt to douse raging flames.

"Once the fire is safely under control, we will try to ascertain the extent of the damage and pinpoint exactly what caused the fire," said Kumbaj.

While the production at Kanti Thermal Power plant had already come to a screeching halt following the development of major technical snafu a few days ago, the Tuesday fire is certain to further worsen the power situation in an already power-strapped Bihar.
