Opposition up in Arms over Murder of CPI-M Activist
Patna: March 27, 2008
Opposition leaders in Bihar on Thursday disrupted the state Assembly over the killing of a Communist Party of India (M) activist in Begusarai district resulting in the adjournment of the House by Speaker Uday Narain Chowdhary.
Leaders from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and other parties, chanting anti-government slogans, marched to the well after Chowdhary turned down a plea by the CPI-M legislator Ramdeo Verma to accept his adjournment notice to discuss political killings in Bihar.
Amidst much noise and protest, the Speaker adjourned the House till noon. When it reconvened, chaos ensued again as Chowdhary ruled Verma's notice 'against the rules'.
Sanity was somewhat restored after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stepped in and promised to make a statement over recent killings of some political activists.
As reported, Rampukar Mahto, a CPI-M activist, was gunned down in Begusarai on Wednesday night.
Hard core Maoists are suspected to be behind Mahto's killing, officials say.
