Man in Police Custody Attempts Suicide

Patna: March 31, 2008

A man arrested on charges of stealing a mobile phone on Sunday morning tried to self-immolate himself while being in custody of the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Rajendra Nagar Terminal in Patna on Monday sending a shockwave among senior railway officials.

According to the police report, Munna Dubey, a resident of Jehanabad, was taken into railway police custody after Amit Kumar, a Sitamarhi resident, filed charges against him for stealing his cell phone at Rajendra Nagar railway station.

On Monday morning, the accused, while on his way to the bathroom, somehow got hold of some kerosene oil and a matchbook that he used to burn himself.

As Dubey's body caught fire, railway police rushed to him and managed to douse the flames but not before he sustained second-degree burns on nearly 80% of his body, officials said.

He was rushed to the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) where he remains in critical conditions.

The police is investigating the case as to how Dubey managed to get kerosene and a matchbook.

Police brutality has not been ruled out.
