Disgraced Congress MLA Resigns
Patna: May 3, 2008
With pressure mounting from all quarters, embattled Congress MLA from Katihar Sunita Devi on Saturday turned in her resignation in the aftermath of the sex scandal involving her former bodyguard who earlier filed a police case accusing the legislator of forcing him to engage in raunchy sexual acts with her.
To avoid further embarrassment hoping the scandal would die a natural death, Sunita Devi turned in her resignation paper to the president of All India Women's Congress Committee Prabha Thakur who accepted her resignation while promising to give a fair hearing to her side of the story.
A two-member fact-finding team comprising Congress leaders Mahzabin Khan and Shikha Kapoor is scheduled to arrive in Patna on May 5 to hold a hearing at the party headquarters at Sadaqat Ashram.
Whether the disgraced MLA would remain in the party or would be expelled would be decided following the report of the committee, Thakur said.
As reported, Yogeshwar Sharma, Sunita Devi's former bodyguard, on April 29 filed a case of sexual exploitation against the legislator accusing her of sexually exploiting him for a prolonged period of time.
Sharma was fired by the Bihar police on Friday for going public against the legislator who maintains her innocence saying she was the victim of a nefarious plan hatched by Sharma to blackmail her for monetary gains.
