Patna: May 4, 2008
A fire in the generator caused by electrical short-circuit gutted the engine and two bogies of a passenger train on its way from Patna to Danapur railway yard for routine maintenance work on Sunday.
The incident occurred at around 6:15 pm when the empty train suddenly caught fire near Phulwari railway station disrupting traffic on both up and down lines for over five hours, Danapur Divisional Railway Manager B. D. Garg said.
As reported, the train was put on a side track to allow Sampoorna Kranti to pass when the engine in the back of the train caught fire. By the time firefighting team arrived at the spot, the entire engine and two bogies behind it were irreversibly damaged.
Several trains at Patna Junction including Rajdhani Express, Vikramshila, Gareeb Rath, Sanghmitra Express, Danapur-Howrah, Capital Express, and Northeast Express were delayed for hours. Traffic was finally restored at around 11:00 pm.
No injury was reported since the entire train was empty, Garg said.
