Dr. Tejaswi to Attend UN General Assembly
Patna: May 5, 2008
Noted physician and AIDS expert Dr. Diwakar Tejaswi has been invited to attend the UN General Assembly meet to be held on June 16-17 for his exemplary contribution in the area of AIDS awareness, prevention, and treatment, a spokesperson for Dr. Tejaswi said.
Dr. Tejaswi, who is also one of the nine physicians selected from India out of a total of 57 physicians from across the globe to be nominated for the prestigious Dr. Jonathan Mann Award (2008) is also in the selection committee for the 2008 Red Ribbon Award to be given out by the UNAIDS between August 3 and 8 in Mexico City.
Other physicians from India to be nominated for the Dr. Jonathan Mann award include Swami Hardas of Pune, Surya Makaria of Hyderabad, Dilip Mhaske of Mumbai, Ugrasen Pandey of Kolkata, Mukesh Shukla of Surendranagar, and the incarcerated pediatrician and human rights activist Binayak Sen of Raipur.
Sen has been languishing in a Madhya Pradesh jail for over a year without any trial or bail under the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act, 2005 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 2004 relating to sedition, conspiracy to wage war against the state, and conspiracy to commit other offenses.
Comments:
I was going through the story telling that Dr Tejaswi would be attending a function abroad. In the last paragraph of the story the reporter had wrote that Dr Binayak Sen another doctor selected for the same function is languishing in a jail of Madhya Pradesh. The fact is that Dr Sen is in a jail in Raipur Central Prison of Chhattisgarh and not in any jail of Madhya Pradesh.
Kindly make a correction in your story. - T Amitabh - May 6, 2008
Dr. Binayak Sen has in fact been selected for the Jonathan Mann Award 2008 as announced by the Global Health Council on April 21. The Council and many other organisations as well as many distinguished persons have appealed to the state and central authorities to enable Sen (who is only an undertrial and not a convict) to receive the award in person on May 29th in Washington, USA. The government is yet to indicate its response to these appeals. - Dr P Zachariah May 6, 2008
