Strong Wind, Rain Leaves Patna without Power

Patna: May 5, 2008

Strong Wind, Rain Leaves Patna without Power. Photo by Shashi UttamHeavy downpour with wind gushing over 60 kmph took its toll in Patna on Monday knocking down trees, billboards, and electric poles while leaving many areas without power for hours.

The collapse of a gigantic billboard installed atop a private residence in Shastri Nagar left areas like Ashiana Nagar, Raja Bazaar, and houses close to the airport without power for over seven hours prompting an anti-administration protest on the streets.

Patna Electrical Supply Undertaking (PESU) officials said an FIR had been lodged against the house owner who had constructed large metal billboard on top of his residence in violation of several local and zonal laws.

Meanwhile, several trees uprooted by the strong wind caused a traffic chaos at many parts of the city while exposing the inefficiency of the Patna Municipal Corporation that took anywhere from 4 to 8 hours to remove the debris.
