Patna Doctors Give Free Health Advise on World Asthma Day
Patna: May 6, 2008
Noted physician and Padmashree recipient Dr. Gopal Prasad Sinha, at a free health camp in Patna to mark the World Asthma Day on Tuesday, said while over 5 crore people in India were the victims of Asthma, help was available and with proper treatment and some change in lifestyle could bring immense relief to the patients.
Blaming the rise in the use of artificial, chemical-laden materials in the modern society, Dr. Sinha said one out of every six asthma sufferer in the world was an Indian. With use of plastic and other synthetic material and dust in the air, a large number of people develop allergy which gives rise to asthma," he said.
Dr. Sinha, however, said that there were many new drugs to combat asthma and people suffering from this debilitating disease should seek proper medical advice from asthma experts.
Former president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Dr. Ajay Kumar blamed the increase in the consumption of fast food for recent rise in asthma cases though he admitted the researchers were still trying to figure out the actual cause of asthma.
Dr. Diwakar Tejaswi, the noted AIDS specialist, attributed asthma in young children to worms in the intestine.
"When these worms die naturally, they spur asthma attack in children. Therefore, it is extremely important to ensure the children are completely worm-free otherwise they would be more susceptible to asthma-like symptoms," Dr. Tejaswi said.
