Police Fail to Check Armed Robberies in Patna

Patna: May 12, 2008

For the second time in as many days, robbers in Rajiv Nagar subdivision in Patna on late Sunday night forced their entries into a house and after beating up and taking the residents hostage at gun points, escaped with cash and properties with an estimated value of Rs. 2.5 lakh.

The Sunday night robbery that exposed the ineptitude of the Rajiv Nagar police station resulted in the removal of the station in-charge Ravindra Kumar who was replaced by Ashok Kumar Pandey.

As reported, Laxman Prasad, a photo studio manager, had just stepped out of his home to see off some of the guests he was hosting at his home when about 8-10 armed criminals, taking advantage of the unlocked door, entered into the house and took all the inmates hostage at gun points.

For next 45 minutes, the robbers ransacked the house and took away everything they could get their hands on. Those who showed the slightest sign of resistance were beaten up by the criminals.

Interestingly, despite a series of robberies in the same area in last few days, there was no sign of any police patrolling unit in the neighborhood.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amit Kumar promptly recalled Ravindra Kumar to the police line and appointed Pandey in his place.

Kumar Amar Singh, DSP (Law and Order) said four suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the recent robberies in Rajiv Nagar and more raids were being conducted to apprehend others who got away with Rs. 40,000 in cash, jewelries worth over Rs. 1.5 lakh, three cell phones and other items on Sunday night, the police said adding patrolling was being heightened in the area in an effort to bring down crime and restore people's faith in law and order.
