Family Members, Doctors Clash at IGIMS following Patient's Death
Patna: May 12, 2008
Family members of Mrs. Kailashpati Devi (73), who died apparently of old age while being treated at Patna's Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical and Sciences (IGIMS) on Monday, went on a rampage and ransacked the hospital while engaging in brawl with doctors and other hospital staff.
Accusing the doctors of negligence and medical malpractice, irate members of Mrs. Devi's family damaged the car of hospital director Dr. A. K. Singh, broke glass panes, and verbally abused Shastri Nagar police station in-charge Kamod Prasad who arrived there to placate the deceased's family.
After the crowd refused to listen to Prasad, baton-wielding cops jumped into action and resorted to lathi-charge and chased away the mob.
Meanwhile, the doctors denied the charges of negligence saying Mrs. Devi died of heart and kidney failure and not because of improper care as alleged by her family members.
Officials have detained Mrs. Devi's two sons and a daughter to get to the bottom of the incident.
