Private Ambulance Strike Withdrawn

Patna: May 19, 2008

Private ambulance owners in Patna on Monday called off their five-day long strike after the Transport Commissioner K. K. Pathak assured them of giving a fair hearing to their demands that included scrapping of road permit and toll tax and inclusion of private ambulance services in the Emergency category.

Earlier, dozens of ambulance drivers took out a rally from the Red Cross Building and after covering the Gandhi Maidan and Dak Bungalow crossing, arrived at the R-Block where two of its workers were arrested for trying to cross the police barricade.

The arrest led to a heated argument between the law-enforcement officials and the agitators who demanded release of the activists before holding a meeting with the Transport Commissioner.

To prevent the situation from further flaring, the two men were released and a meeting was arranged with the Transport Commissioner who assured them to give their demands a fair hearing within next 15 days.

Threatening to re-launch their strike if their demands were not met within 15 days, the ambulance drivers then called off their strike and resumed services at 6:00 pm.
