Bihar Truckers to Observe 'Chakka Jaam' on Oct. 24-25
Patna: Oct. 13, 2008
Members of the Bihar Motor Transport Federation in Patna on Monday said that all truck operators in the state would stay off the road on October 24 and 25 to protest overloading 'so callously allowed by government officials for personal gains'.
The Federation's president Uday Shankar Prasad Singh, at a dharna at the Income Tax Roundabout, said that despite several warnings to the state transporters, the truckers continued to overload their vehicles in collusion with state officials who were earning millions in bribe money as revealed by the recent arrests of several transport department employees by the state Vigilance Bureau.
"This has got to stop and since the transporters are blatantly ignoring the ban on overloading imposed by the Supreme Court, it is up to us now to take steps to put an end to such illegal activities," Singh said.
The protestors appealed to the government to help impose ban on overloading and set up more checking points on Bihar highways to ensure truckers were playing by the rule and not hurting those who did believe in the rule of law and the court mandate.
