I
recently watched the movie "Rang de Basanti" on
DVD. It has a great story. The idea of young
people getting inspired to fight corruption by
merely enacting the lives of Freedom fighters is
a novel one. It is an unusual movie. It shows
that people of the country should rise against
corrupt politicians. However, this movie has a
dark side.
The language is filthy. "Ma di..." and "Behen di...."
are dispersed through the movie like fruit
pieces in fruit cake. There is also the four
letter F word in the menu of the DVD !
To summarize, the film sends two messages:
First, if the political leaders are corrupt and
as exploitative as the British, the people of
India should resist them as they resist the
British - with the use of force.
Second, our collective moral character has taken
a dip and today we make movies that are vulgar
and full of obscene language (unnecessarily). We
use bad language in the DVD menu also! Maybe
outside XXX movies the use of the "F" word in
the menu is a first in the world!
It is a great movie, but I resent the use of
written and spoken bad language. The movie has
something to say both about our politicians and
our film makers. It is like someone has taken a
Rembrandt and used it like toilet paper!

Aarcee ji, I completely agree with
you. In the name of 'realism',
film-makers are getting away with
crude dialogs and scenes. Generally
speaking, I am pleased with some of
the new films but it seems the new
genre of Hindi films (NRI-oriented)
are using the 'S' word and the 'F'
word more liberally now than ever
before, not to mention the 'ma di
and 'bahen di' in other so-called
realistic movies. One has to be very
careful what you are watching with
your family members. - Anil Kumar
