I
found a recent article about Mumbai Immigration
Officials deporting small children very
distressing. Let me share it with you:
http://www.rediff.com/news/2006/dec/20george.htm
The story is about an Indian couple who, by
mistake, forgot the visas of the kids when they
left for India. The immigration officials in
Bombay asked them to go back on the next flight.
They did not budge from their position despite
tearful pleas from the parents who, upon
discovering the error had asked friends to go to
their home, retrieve the documents and fax them
over. The documents arrived two minutes after
the deported family left.
This in itself would have been a case of 'going
by the book' or 'insensitiveness' or 'lack of
compassion' on the part of the Immigration
official. But while he was turning these young
children back, he was processing a temporary 2
day visa for a Frenchman who had 'forgotten' to
get an Indian visa.
I have a feeling that there is more to the
story. The Indian family must have failed to
offer a large enough bribe to the ACP, who then,
must have gotten angry and decided to push the
law to the letter. Good for him. But this
incident shows that still there is the mentality
embodied in such officials that enabled the
British to colonize and exploit India for 200
years.
I sure would like readers' reaction to this
article. But, please read the entire referenced
news story before you pen down your thoughts.

This is outright inhuman and utterly
shameful behavior on the part of
Mumbai immigration department and
Air France. Are all rules made for
honest citizens only. The spirit
behind making the rule is clean
forgotten. If no judgment and
discretion can be used by officers
in such apparent cases, we should
rather substitute them with
computers. Are rules made to harass
people or to stop crime? This must
be investigated and the guilty must
be punished. - Rajesh - Dec. 28,

It is a sad story. It shows the
insensitivity and callousness of
immigration officials besides their
slavish mentality. We should also be
careful while taking a trip to
India/USA and leave nothing to
chance. Thanks. - Satya - Dec.
