The
rich and the powerful always have their way in
our country somehow. Over the years the concept
of "bada aadmi" or "achchha aadmi" has also
changed. Earlier, a good teacher, a good doctor,
or a good lawyer used to be considered a "bada
aadmi" and invariably the concept of 'bada aadmi'
included the tenets of 'achchha aadmi" in it.
But somehow something has gone wrong with our
psyche and now a 'bada addmi' is determined by
how much money or muscle power he has, without
bothering about the source of that money or
muscle power. This is the gift of politics to
India. At least two gruesome murder cases
currently under the media spotlight also
underscore the fact that even the progeny of the
"bada aadmi" considers itself to be above law
and flaunts its money or muscle without any
shame.
However, there is a ray of hope! The recent
media activism and the emergent public opinion
has forced the system to recognise and respect
the rule of Law in our country. The convictions
in Priyadarshini Mattoo's and Jessica Lal's
cases have revive one's faith in the Indian
judicial system. More so, because at least in
Jessica's case the conviction has been handed
down to the son of a very powerful political
leader affiliated to the ruling party at the
center. His co-accused, son of another political
leader is also the main accused in Nitish Katara
murder case, the judgment of which is awaited.
The fast tracking of the three murder cases has
been made possible due to media attention and
public pressure and the media is to be
appreciated for the campaign it ran for getting
justice to the victims' families.
Through your website, I invite readers and
contributors to initiate a similar media
campaign for re-trial in the Satyendra Dubey
case. The young, honest engineer who laid his
life for speaking the truth must be given his
due. The present Bihar Government should take up
the case for re-investigation and retrial for
unearthing the truth. Let truth only triumph and
nothing else!
