We,
the family of the slain Professor Papiya Ghosh,
are deeply touched by the spontaneous
outpourings of sympathy and support that have
been coming in from her friends, colleagues, and
from those who had known her.
We thank them for their feelings, thoughts,
tributes and their suggestions for keeping
Papiya's memory alive.
Papiya was an extraordinary person. Though she
presented a tough exterior, she was full of
compassion, and would feel happy if she could
bring a smile on the face of anyone around her,
even if she had to make a sacrifice for it. She
could not stand injustice, and would fight it
alone if necessary.
Totally selfless and dedicated, she gave up her
job at Hindu College, Delhi, and came to teach
in Patna University. She was working ceaselessly
and tirelessly for almost three decades to bring
back the standard of education in Bihar to its
former glory. She believed in the potential
Bihar has, and was trying in her own way, to
unleash the same.
But the dreams shattered and the lights went off
on the dark, cold night of the 2nd December,
2006 in Patna, leaving us, her family, shocked,
devastated, and confused.
The loss of Papiya is irreparable, but civil
society has a responsibility. It has to unearth
the truth... the conspiracy behind this heinous
crime which took the life of an innocent,
upright, and helpless citizen. A crime of this
scale must have been meticulously planned over
some time. Its perpetrators must be identified
and brought to justice as quickly as possible.
Papiya has made her last and final sacrifice for
Bihar. In her death she has provided a challenge
and an opportunity to Bihar, for it to prove
that the law of the land still holds true in the
state, a notion she firmly believed in.
In the coming days, we shall wait for the truth
to prevail.

My condolence to the family of the
slain professor who was a victim of
lawlessness and indiscipline of the
society. Conspiracy or no
conspiracy, a person has been killed
and that's too shameful for us and
especially the police system of the
state that eats up the scarce
financial resources of the poor
state like ours, scare the
sabjiwallahs to get free tomatoes,
take 2 rupees per day from the shoe
polish person sitting near the
station, salute the local DADA in
the evening, get drunk by 7 pm in
the night, and sit outside their
hell, the local thana, in search of
BAKRAs coming to file complaints. -
