If BIT Mesra student Abhishek Mishra, who was most eligible, eminent, studious and captain of college cricket team, had swimming skills, he won’t have died suspiciously. This tragedy teach only one lesion: never fall in love with wards of politicians, police, and gundas. It may be an accident or planned killing. But this death could have been avoided, if Abhishek had acquainted himself with the swimming.

Two years back, the only son of my relative, who was an Engineering student, died in similar fashion on the shallow beach of Puri. The worst truth is, his accompanying colleagues watched him dying but they neither tried to rescue him nor seek help from others for the same and they went on “Ägyat Waas”, like Ragini, Vikash and Bharat did in case of Abhishek.

In another incident, six students of Engineering College Sambalpur, Orissa died in Mahanadi, because the water of Hirakud dam was released suddenly. Every year millions are dying of drowning in India.

Six months back, I assumed myself the he-man and jumped in the icy glacier of Great Andes. I was dying but rescued myself as I knew swimming. Although that saved my life, pain was severe and it took me 3 hours to get back to normal. In foreign countries, death from drowning is minimal as most of the citizens know how to swim.

In recent Chhath Puja many teenagers drowned and died in Jamshedpur and in several parts of India. I learned swimming because, I was dying from drowning and was lucky to defeat the death. Government will not teach kids the swimming. Parents are careless, although their kids don’t know swimming they allow their kids to enjoy picnic near the water. I never had good experience on picnic spots in India. People drink, throw garbage, plastic bags everywhere, litter on the scene tic spots, pass illicit remarks to the girls of other groups, and although not professional, try for adventure to impress female folks and die of negligence. In my view picnic should be banned in India, because of lack of facility on picnic spots and callous and selfish colleagues.

In such a scenario, why not make swimming compulsory for young kids, so that at the time of need, at least drowning related deaths can be avoided. Swimming is such a technique, once learned can never be forgotten. Surprisingly no one teaches swimming to animals, but they can swim to salvage their life, when needed.

Why not promise yourself to counsel your relatives to learn swimming? Let us initiate such revolution by PatnaDaily readers and promise not to settle down unless each Bihari learns the swimming.

If Afjal Guru, Dawood Ibrahim or tainted politicians die of drowning, I will not have pain, but it pains when bright and innocent student like Abhishek Mishra dies. It really pains and indeed it pains.

Try to understand the severity of this matter. I am writing this letter with heavy heart for all honest Biharis.
