Social Justice Virus

First of all happy New Year 2006. Naya saal mangalmay ho .

A great social engineer in Bihar created a Virus of social justice in early 90's. The Virus was created in socialist lab. The Virus was created to break the hegemony of upper caste, Brahmans, Rajputs, Bhumihars, Kayasthas. Virus was created to empower lower caste Dusadh, Mushar, Chamar, Yadav. Virus was potent, was powerful. Virus started replacing Mishra, Jha, Singh, Sinha by Yadav, Mahto, Paswan, Ram in the Assembly, in offices, in BPSC; everywhere. Virus started giving Jukam (cold) to upper caste. They started coughing. Lower caste enjoyed, gave hearty laugh. There oppression for thousands of year had ended. Now Bhuleshwar Jha can no longer beat Mangal Mahto. In fact now Monu Yadav can beat anyone any time. Virus was working, working hard. Lakhs of lower class people rallied along their great engineer.

Suddenly upper caste started realizing all the evils, which were there. They started feeling that in few years roads have become worse. Potholes have become much bigger. Poverty has increased, Law and order deteriorated. Not for lower caste though. Dinu Paswan, Bhola Mahto, Jeetan Ram felt much safer now, roads were more comfortable for them now as they can now roam freely without any fear. Virus was working; working great doing what it suppose to be. And engineer was beloved of everyone.

But the property of Virus is it keeps mutating. Soon Virus mutated. Jha, Sharmas, Sinhas, Singhs started migrating to Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta, USA any wherever they could. Those stayed in Bihar started thinking how to fight the Virus. They started working hard. Since politics was no longer there forte, they started preparing for medical entrance examination. Since BPSC was no longer in their reach they started preparing for IAS. Since they could no longer snatch government jobs like before they started doing private jobs. Those who stayed in Bihar started doing agriculture; they started ploughing hul that their ancestors had not done in several thousand years. But they kept fighting and building their immunity against this Virus. Their jukam (cold) was slowly reducing.

But Virus kept mutating. Soon the potholes on roads were not only visible to upper caste, some moderate lower castes also realized that potholes on road became slightly larger. Roads are little worse than before. They also felt crime has somewhat increased. But Virus was working. Something it achieved after thousands of years cannot be sacrificed so soon and engineer was cheered may be not as much though. Instead of lakhs, now 10s of thousands use to turn to see him.

But Virus was mutating getting more potent. With Jha, Sinha, Singh gone from their ways, Yadavs took over the reign. Naxals destroyed agriculture faster than they could destroy Ranvir Sena. With thousands of student migrating outside, crores of rupees were going to Pune, Bangalore, Mumbai. Businessmen, doctors, engineers moved out. Economy collapsed!

The Virus became much more potent now. The Virus, which was giving Jukam to upper caste so far now started giving Pneumonia. And because of low immunity it started giving Pneumonia to lower castes mainly. Now suddenly Dinu Paswan and Bhola Mahto realized that nothing changed for them . Collectors, MP and MLAs are now Yadavs, Koyaris, Kurmis instead of Mishras, Singhs and Sinhas. But they were probably as corrupt as they were before. Criminals were use to be hired before by politicians but not any longer. Now criminals themselves were politicians. Oppressors changed but oppression remained. It was not giving much comfort to Dinu Paswan and Bhola Mahto that now they are being oppressed by one of their own rather than some one else. They no longer liked the social engineer. But it was too late.

The Virus grew strong and strong.

The Virus which once started as a Virus to give Jukam and Cold started creating Cancer and striking at will. Virus was striking and killing everywhere. Upper caste Bihari students were coming back with red face after being beaten by upper caste Shiv Sena. With hands and legs tied, lower caste Bihari laborers were coming back after being slaughtered by lower caste ULFA. The Virus, which was created to save one Bihari from other now, actually was destroying all. Actually now it was binding them together as one oppressed group. The Virus which was created to uplift lower castes created a new caste "Bihari", a caste far more inferior than any other caste. This new caste was untouchable, unwanted and unwelcome not only by "Non-Biharis" but by people of its own kind who could escape this virus by migrating elsewhere.

Social engineer's vision failed. Illusion, if any, came to dead end last in Oct 2005. This time nobody cheered. It gave no pleasure to lower caste that one of them only was still ruling Bihar. It gave no pleasure to upper caste that the engineer which created the Virus is no longer in power. Now the fight is with the Virus. The fight is to eliminate this new and lowest caste. The fight is to not let any other Virus destroy us again. And our new engineer who is from the same school has learnt a very different lesson. He is trying to create a Knowledge Center, he is trying to bring tourists to Bihar, he is trying to bring law and order back. He is trying to open Engineering colleges. He is trying to bring economy back.

What am I doing?

I am writing this article on New Year day for PatnaDaily. I am taking a pledge to send a check to the new engineer. I am taking a resolution to invest some small part of my small fortune in Bihar. I am taking a resolution that I will spend at least half of my vacation every time I visit India in Bihar. I am taking a resolution that I will proudly tell everyone that I am a "BIHARI" no matter what. I am taking a resolution that I will keep reading PatnaDaily and Bihar Times regularly.

What you are doing? Beside reading this article ? And yes Happy New Year 2006. Naya saal mangalmay ho.

Pandeyjee, you are living in dreams. Social justice is not a virus but it is a medicine, of course it is a bitter medicine, at least for some people. - Rajesh Sahu, Manchester, UK - Jan. 5, 2006

Sitting in London, Mr. Sahu does not realize the plight of Bihar. One who has lived in Bihar over the last 30 - 40 years can clearly see how things have changed in Bihar. First affecting one group of people, then as the rot spread, it attacked the ones it was supposed to protect.

Today, the poor people, regardless of caste, are left behind. The creamy class tries to defend caste based reservations because it steals the benefits that should go to the poor dalits.

If some in the 'creamy class' object to 'economic backwardness' as being the sole criterion, so be it. In that case, caste backwardness and economic backwardness should both be made criteria for the 'set asides' or quotas. If both boxes are checked, then the person gets the benefits of social justice. How's that ?

I am sure the 'creamy class' won't like that at all!!! But how can you argue against that ? - Aarcee - Jan. 6, 2006

On PD people have frequently talked about the infamous “Bihari attitude”. What is there in this “Bihari attitude” that is so annoying? From what I could make out the following behavioral attributes are the major problems:

Taking advantage of others by hook or by crook.

Twisting all logic/rules to suit ones interest.

Snatching others property/due.

Criticizing others while indulging in the same crime oneself.

Oppressive / exploitive behavior towards poor / weak.

Talking loudly and at times in bad language to prove oneself right.

The “creamy class” backwards have also been complaining very loudly about this “Bihari attitude” and blaming it for all the ills of Bihar. Are they not displaying the very same infamous traits?

They have robbed their poor brethren of their rightful due and justify this grave wrong with all kinds of weird logics. You can compare trait for trait and you will find a match. The “creamy class” backwards talk of bitter justice. Bitter for who? Justice for who? For the poor backwards who still languish in villages with hopeless future? After all they constitute the overwhelming majority of sufferers.

The “creamy class” backwards have made an elite group much like the Nazi SS. For them they are the ever deprived “pure bloods” and should enjoy all advantages for ever while the poor are of “impure blood” born to suffer and die. - RC - Jan. 6, 2006
