Heading: Boy jumps to death in West Delhi
"A 23-year-old boy jumped to his death on
Wednesday morning at the West Delhi District
Centre."
Here is the actual link to the story.
Couple of things immediately jumped into my
mind:
At what age does a boy become a man? Is it that
till he is single he will be referred to as boy?
That logic can't be true because I personally
know several people who are in their 50s and 60s
and have never been married in their lives.
Or is he considered a boy until he lives with
his parents? That also couldn't be true because
many families I know live in a joint family
where grown up, married sons live with their
wives and children in the same house as their
father, and in some cases, even grandfather.
Is a 23-year old youth in India eligible to buy
liquor and cigarette and be able to vote in
elections or is he not? Last I checked, he is.
So why they are frequently referred to as
'boys'?
Another thing, unrelated to the above questions,
that bothers me about this article is that the
writer Anasuya Roy injects her (I am assuming
it's her and not his) own 'opinion' when she
writes, "It is clear that the Delhi police are
under tremendous pressure to find a way to stop
the incidents from being repeated in the
future."
First, how did she come to this conclusion?
Isn't this her opinion and not exactly 'news'
per se? And second, how can you prevent someone
who is bent on committing suicide by jumping
from a tall building? "Hello police? I am about
to jump from the fifth floor of my office. You
have exactly 5 minutes to come and stop me from
jumping or else you will find my dead body lying
on the ground."
Is this how it is supposed to work?
Is it just me who is seeing more and more
personal opinions being injected in articles in
the name of news or others feel the same way?
I welcome your response.

You are a little wrong. Get a cell
phone, jump from a building high
enough to allow you to make a call
before you hit Mother Earth. Call
the police to report that you jumped
from the building and will be on the
ground any second, so please come
and stop me. I agree with you; it is
all a stupid idea and putting it on
paper or a computer without thinking
does not make it logical.
No one can stop anyone if they are
really committed to do any kind of
crime or suicide. Even if all the
people who said they wanted to do
harm were rounded up and jailed,
they would find a way to hurt
themselves. Even though suicide is
an unfortunate and desperate choice,
it is still a personal decision.
Every person and every thought or
desire can not be policed
externally.
As far as personal opinions being
interjected into news reports, as
long as people write the reports,
there will be bias. Sometimes it is
just more obvious. I have to say,
however, that with stories repeated
a large number of times, it
sometimes does feel like a kind of
brainwashing.
The Boy Vs. Man thing is something
different. One would imagine that at
the age of majority, a male would be
called "man." To some extent, all
males are both "boy" and "man" all
their lives. I think this is why
Americans liberally use the word
"guy" -- it applies to all ages. If
you act stupidly, you are a boy, and
act sensibly, you are a man. On a
lighter note, boys buy and men pay.
Assign the title "boy" or "man"
accordingly. - Anwar SMK, New

Ha
ha ha... I can't stop laughing about
the images invoked by Mr. Bose and
Mr. Anwar about jumping from a tall
building. Very funny!! - Anil
