Last Sunday at 2:00 PM, I switched on the TV to watch news. It was Star News channel. For the next 20 minutes, the 'shocking news' the channel showed us was that Udita Goswami performed in a Rakhi Sawant Night. They had Rakhi Sawant on line to comment on this 'injustice'. The anchor was repeating the same questions and the same answers were being repeated by Rakhi Sawant. In the left corner of the screen, an 'artistic' clipping of some old stage show of 'artist' Rakhi was being repeated as well. If you don't know who this lady is, you must not be watching 'news' these days.

Next news, you just can't believe it. Let us remind you that it is exclusively brought to you by this news channel. In that stage show of Udita Goswami which was actually Rakhi Sawant's show, there was a look-alike of Himesh Reshamiya in the audience! If you don't know who Reshamiya is, you must not be listening to Hindi film 'music' these days. Don't go away, we have much more breaking news coming up after this commercial break, says the anchor. And don't forget that we have a special show tonight at 8:30 PM - "John ki Jaaneman".

I switched over to an English channel. Looked like some interesting debate is going on. It was about live-in relationship. The anchor had a young boy and a girl in the newsroom. They share an apartment in Delhi. The anchor asks bluntly, "So, have you ever had sex with each other?". What else business do I have than to hear about their relationship?

But, then there was another commercial break and I had to switch to another channel.

There are even more interesting news shows in the night. On crime, described with so much detail and thrill that you can be made a witness to the case after the show. On superstitions, news, just news, without any message. A child who remembers his previous life. Wow! I don't remember what I had for lunch yesterday. This chap must be taking memory pills in his last incarnation.

After seeing so many news channels running 24/7, I was still hungry for news. I remembered the time when we watched the news on DD at 8:30 PM and had stomach-full of news in just half an hour. How boring it was, wasn't it?

Comments:
Ha Ha Ha... Interesting read... Nicely written...

You are very much right. These days new channels (especially Hindi ones) have turned into masala channels.

But there are a few still worth watching. I prefer Times now and CNN/IBN to any other channel. - Brajesh Sinha - July 5, 2006

Long Live Star News Channel! Last night they had a special show at 9:30 PM “Sex Scandal ka such”. The first two words were highlighted in bold red letters in the advertisement which was shown all the day. First time by any news channel!

Thanks to the millions of people who watch these shows to improve their TRP ratings. These news channels have felt the pulse of the masses. They know what public demand is. - Kumod Jha - July 5, 2006

Kumod ji:

Well said. These Indian TV channels have become the source of soft pornography. They have discovered the age-old formula of 'Sex Sells' and are flooding the air with such shows and 'analyses' that attempt to whet the appetite of our hormone-raging youths of today.

I have often complained about the 'trashy' nature of certain web sites that also cater to such people. Times of India, in my opinion, leads the pack. This site has its priorities so messed up that it prefers to put the picture of Paris Hilton talking about her sexcapades on its cover page than the picture of, say, Manmohan Singh. It appears to have strong love affair with the Hollywood bimbos and their counterparts in Mumbai film world. I can't help but wonder what kind of persons the editors of these tabloids (they ARE tabloids and not newspapers) are! - Anil Kumar - July 5, 2006

Indian e-media especially TV News channels are probably in competition with the tabloids. Watching many channels including Star TV is a complete waste of time and complaining to them is utter foolishness. Now I just change the channel to either movie channels or English channels. I will prefer to shorten my comments (out of disgust) about Indian News channels as it is not worth it. Like many things, Indians can tolerate all these junks coming out of News channels without complaining. - Manoj Kumar - July 6, 2006
