The 'Bahubalis'

The founding fathers of most democratic countries wanted a strong and just national government. This is needed to protect individual rights and freedoms and also to prevent the government from abusing its power. In order to make this happen most democratic countries including the US, UK and India have three separate branches of the government: the executive, the legislative and the judicial.

The key to a just and strong government is that there should be a balance of powers between the three arms of the government. Each arm of the government must keep a check on the other arm to make sure that it's delivering justice, peace, prosperity and security to the citizens and not using it's position of power to exploit the people instead. After all, the government is for the happiness and well being of the people and not for their exploitation.

In India this fundamental principle has been turned upside down by the emergence of the Bahubali politicians. How do we define these Bahubalis? According to my own definition these are the legislative, judicial, and executive branches all rolled into one with a generous immersion of criminal mindset.

For any country this combination is too much to handle! The Bahubalis are elected to the parliament/assembly by the people (legislative branch), are made ministers by the political parties (executive branch) and by way of their money and muscle power control the police and judiciary (judicial power). Consistent with their names they wield multiple weapons to bring down any adversary. Nothing can stand against them because they are powers of all arms of the government rolled into a single package. They are the zenith of the worst kind of criminals, anti-socials and absolute power.

Historically, Bahubalis have come from the so-called upper castes but because of social empowerment, now Bahubalis have come up amongst the backwards, SC/STs and minorities too. Bahubalis are the most caste-conscious politicians of the lot and their caste awareness is secondary only to their criminal mindset. They fool the people by calling themselves either the messiah or the defenders of the caste they belong to but in reality they are the enemies of all the civilized people. Look at the last names of the MLAs (cutting across party lines) defending Anand Mohan Singh. Look at the last names of MLAs defending Pappu Yadav, Shahabuddin and Sunil Pandey. The caste system based segmentation of Indian society (instead of bonding based on honesty, love for justice and ethics) provides the most fertile manure for the growth of these anti-socials.

The Bahubalis are a danger to our nation and it's people. They need to be urgently put in check and nipped in the bud before they achieve their full criminal potential. Putting down the worst kind of anti-socials (Bahubalis) should send a strong signal to everyone. Seeing even the Bahubalis go down, the smaller criminals will think twice before committing crimes and will forget about getting away with it. Common citizens will develop a sense of security and well-being and will trust and love the Indian nation. To start with, the people need to make sure that they never elect these Bahubalis in the first place. Doesn't matter what caste, region or religion these Bahubalis claim to belong to. Moreover, the political parties (with their so called sophisticated and slightly more civilized leaders) need to stop giving them election tickets. Lastly, the judiciary needs to control their greed and stop itself from being swayed by the bribe money offered by the Bahubalis. The police need to be brave and honest and not be influenced by the Bahubalis power and money.

Stop the Bahubalis now before they stop our toddler nation from realizing it's full potential and make India a banana republic!

Comments:
I am grieved to see people like Sunil Pandey going scot-free after creating an ugly and horrible scene at Maurya Lok Hotel.

I feel so frustrated for not having any influencing power to bring these goons to the justice table so that they at least say "sorry" and vow not to repeat that in future. Instead of feeling guilty and apologizing about the whole episode , the person has audacity to make statements in full media glare about how would he have handled the SSP if the latter had come to apprehend him. For the un-initiated, this person when reacting to Anand Mohan - SSP squabble, had said he would have shot the SSP. I am often aghast and wonder how do they get the confidence that nothing will happen to them by making such comments. Do they think the "democracy" is in their clutches and all they have to worry about is respond to a "show-cause" notice? Yes, they are the real Bahubalis who have no respect for "rule of the land" or the constitution what-so-ever and have no apprehensions with regard to legal implications. They would do anything to maintain their status quo, be it by igniting the communal/caste flame or by secretly supporting the Naxalites. How much ever rustic they might appear in their behavior, they are intelligent enough to understand that they will garner enough support even among the educated class who would find some egoistic or emotional reason to connect with them.

I had great hopes from Nitish Kumar that he would try and keep these goons under check. But he is behaving like any other ordinary chief minister when it comes to dealing with these issues. Couple of times that I have seen him speaking to the media on these issues, he seemed to have no seriousness about the issues and kept smiling, as if to suggest " you got me there". This might be his style of functioning and let us hope it is effective. I think he is honest and has taken some initiative to create some buzz but aren't they still only a buzz? I have not visited Patna since he took over. Is there any noticeable development in Patna, let alone Bihar as a whole, that we can sit up and take notice and feel proud about. He has already been at helm for almost 3 quarters now. We, sure, would like to give him the benefit of doubt as he has to scrap a lot of rust to begin with but the last thing I would like him to do is try and save his government by pleasing the coalition partners or dissidents as that will be a recipe for disaster. That might be a pragmatic approach but will serve Bihar no good.

On a positive note, it is a welcome sign that people like Shahabuddin and Anand Mohan are behind bars. Punishment, as they say, should serve a notice to other criminals that their criminal activities would not go un-noticed and they will end up being behind the bars or will be hanged. We want such sort of precedence to be set so that people think twice before indulging into criminal activity. Crimes would still continue to happen but it is reducing the intensity and frequency that we should be aiming at.

Media has been playing generally a good role in highlighting the highhandedness of the criminals and it has indeed created some fear among them. Some of the sting operations they have conducted in the past may be controversial and politically motivated but on a whole they are doing an "ok" job on this front. What I would want them to do "less -of" is over blowing the issues involving Raakhi Sawant or for that matter the Mutuk Nath Chowdhary episode. A casual mention is fine as I understand they have to provide some spice for commercial considerations but running 30 min capsules on these just dilutes their effectiveness on a whole. - Ravindra Shahi - July 22, 2006

Somji you have made a great point. The list of Bahubalis is long. The worst of the lot are Raghuraj Pratap Singh or Raja Bhaiyya , Rajan Tiwari, Munna Shukla, Anant Singh, Taslimuddin, Shahabuddin, Pappu Yadav, Anand Mohan, Sunil Pandey, Babloo Srivastava, Abu Azmi and so on and so forth. But because of their false caste based ego people choose to ignore and trivialise or in the worst case support these criminals. - Rajesh Sahu, Manchester, UK - July 23, 2006

Thank you Mr. Vishwakarma for a nicely written article. You hit the nail on its head when you say that these bahubalis are almost turning Bihar into a banana republic. However, the bottom-line is that its a reality whether we like it or not. How did all this came to such a situation ? Who is responsible for it and more importantly how are we going to improve these situations ? The perpetual question still remains who is going to bell the cat. One of the solutions I could think of is that all citizens of Bihar should make sure to vote whenever possible. If PatnaDaily conducts a poll asking how many of us have voted in the last few elections, I would not be surprised if I find that very few of us would have voted. I mean these goons are stomping the political canvas of Bihar like a a raging bull, a mad elephant but they derive all their power through democratic processes only. I think being ordinary citizens we can make sure to vote so that such candidates do not get a democratic validity of their practice of might-is-right policy. It is incumbent upon us, the common citizens that we vote and vote right rising above all the bias and prejudices. Unless we vote, I guess we would keep on whining about this and that situation of Bihar sitting on our comfy chairs in our own la-la land in US, UK or wherever the safest place we could find far and far away from Bihar. I mean we can just wish away this problem that such and such bahubalis wont trouble our society any more. We have got to be active and vote. Its not only our right but we also owe it to our future generations. - Ravindra Kumar - July 26, 2006
