It's really unfortunate that Girija Devi could not attend the UN summit. It's a matter of shame for the people rather than the government of Bihar, and more importantly, for the administration of East Champaran district. But for the lackadaisical attitude of the DM, East Champaran office, Girija Devi could have boarded the flight to New York.

I am aghast at the attitude of the district administration. I mean how could they ever do this to a simple village lady who was all set to make the district proud at the world stage? This clearly shows how the bureaucrats function in this country. They must be brought to book.

Now the state government should fix the responsibility ASAP and punish the guilty severely so that no one meets the fate of Girija Devi in future.

Comments:
The passport office is part of central administration, but the lack of proper governance for many decades has affected the functioning of even the central governance. My cousin from Patna who works for a multinational in Delhi couldn't go on a work-tour to London simply because the passport office was not accepting Tatkaal application for passport, giving dubious reasons. Similarly, my wife is pregnant, and we are unable to get any relatives here to US simply because of the long churning road in getting a passport. My brother-in-law applied for a passport more than an year ago, and still the process is stuck somewhere.

The fundamental question is, instead of we asking for a passport, why doesn't the government of India issue a life-long passport to every Indian child at birth? Why should we struggle to get this, isn't this our right to have one?

Greed on the part of employees at passport office is understandable, but I don't understand the lack of vigilance. - Ranjit Kumar, Moline, IL, USA - Mar. 3, 2006
