Every now and then we happen to hear and know some politically egged-on outburst and outcry against Biharis and their appearing in different competitive exams conducted by other states.

Those with such an aversion for Bihar and Biharis should understand that Biharis are no less than anybody, as far as the talent is concerned. Though the literacy rate of Bihar is poorer than that of other States, yet the fact remains that Bihari students have been proving their talent in different competitive exams. It is a fact well known to all that a large number of candidates passing the civil services exams belong to Bihar. Even last year, Bihar produced 158 IAS and IPS, UP being the first 201 in view of its larger area.

Biharis are possessed with countless qualities except for a few shortcomings. They are hard working, struggling, audacious, adjusting, sociable, talented and very much competitive. They can get settled anywhere in the world; earn their livelihood in any way. They don’t look forward to others for any sort of support. These features can’t be found in any people of other states.

Corruption, murder, Kidnapping, rape, scam, looting, snatching... all these evils are rampant in almost all the States of India. But in case of Bihar it is much more highlighted by media, causing severe criticism of its people. All are blind to the fact that Mumbai is the haven of criminals, Dada and Bhai. Punjab shelters terrorism, Andhra Pradesh extremists, Kashmir insurgents, and West Bengal infiltrators. UP fosters casteism and Tamil Nadu jingoist crime.

"Biharis don’t look forward to others for any sort of support."

This is a very true statement. I have seen people from other states try to use other people for their own benefits, not able to stand without support from others, form groups to survive and manipulate the situation and in general be intimidated and afraid of a difficult situation and try to form a herd. On the other hand, I have always found Biharis to be fiercely independent, courageous and brave. Biharis will help others but will not try to take their help. These are characters of a strong personality and good ethics. People might call me biased but I am writing what I have observed. If only the Bihari society was free of caste based discrimination, Bihar could have gone places and the strong Bihari personalities could have led the whole nation towards progress and justice. - Som Vishwakarma - May 4, 2006

Let us do away with caste, crime and corruption and Bihar will be India's most prized possession. But that is a long way to go, a lot of homework to do. - Ravi - May 5, 2006

This is absolutely right. Wherever you go (with my experience in India and Europe) and as soon as you mention in the Indian Diaspora that you are from Bihar they look you with suspicion. It’s the people perception that has to be changed which can only be done with good work, maintaining the goodwill and giving back to the society. - Pankaj Kishore, U.K. - May 8, 2006
