The home page of PD on May 17th said it all. What started as a protest by the medicos from Delhi University has begun to spread far and wide. Soon, students from the western part of India, Mumbai also showed their solidarity by standing in shoulder with their compatriots from Delhi. They were then joined by students from the eastern part of India, Patna to voice their concerns and stand united in such testing times for the entire student community at large.

What was heartening to see and notice is that the Indian youth is finally awakening from its long slumber and rising above petty politics, to represent the "Indian Youth" in its true sense rather than being labeled as a student force of any political party. Sadly till now, Indian politics has mostly been drawing students who were more inclined in their personal profits and never bothered to look at the betterment of the community at large. With winds of changing blowing, I'm sure that the youth of today is making its presence felt and refuses to be bogged down any further.

I have been reading articles regularly posted on PD regarding the whole reservation episode. No doubt that everyone is free to voice their opinion, after all it is our RIGHT and that's what democracy is all about, right? WRONG ... how is that we always tend to forget the most essential part of the constitution, our DUTIES. As lawful citizens we have duties towards our community, society, city, state and country. Duties apply to all whether he is the common man or the President. What I want to imply is simply the fact that no minister should introduce such a bill which can jeopardize the career of so many students. Maybe Mr. Arjun Singh should first delve into the premier institutes across the nation and see for himself firsthand how students from reserved categories have been faring in premier institutions of higher learning. Dilution of talent and merit will only hamper the educational fabric of the country.

Its high time that students started taking active interest in the realm of politics that they have been shying away from since long. In my opinion, the policy makers should open an active debate over the matter involving qualified and responsible citizens with student representatives. The sooner the matter is resolved the better for all.

The point is that the current situation is not just the headache for medicos but the entire student fraternity. The call for the hour is a panacea that should be able to solve the problem for once and all, so that precious moments and lives are not lost again in future.

Comments:
In bookish term it is nice to say the youths are awakening, but in practical sense, do we realize that; what a precious moment, study and concentration the students are wasting? Having actively participated during Mandal-1, I can understand the trauma the brilliant students are going through.

The politicians failed to provide basic amenities after 60 years of Independence, play innovative and cheap way to mask their failures. While in crisis they instigate "renaming of a city" or "Reservation Tactics" or target "particular community". Overall India is cheap and corrupt 'Demon-cracy'. Even British realized this fact and raised concerns during India's liberation that they are handling over country to corrupt and mean politicians. - Tarakeswar Dubey - May 19, 2006

Let us try and analyze what it is exactly which made the youth of India claim that this reservation issue has enabled the youth to wake up from 50 years of sleep.

So far so good, it does seem that the youth of India is sleeping – at this point it should be fair for thousands who study and do well, can be taken as representatives of Indian youths. And one fine morning, they decide that they have really awakened and hence decide to go on strike which cause trouble to patients who are already suffering and alleviate their pain. This is blackmail or extortion. It may be praiseworthy for few to jeopardize the whole medical system and tomorrow they will jeopardize the railway and day after tomorrow they will jeopardize airlines. Is this a appreciable and responsible act?

The awakened educated youth never goes to vote and now suddenly has realized that doing all this melodrama will change the things. With the power of elections in democracy like India, may be they woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Striking and causing loss to exchequer is like spreading terror and terrorism and is bad. In the long run who will suffer, our country.

While recognizing that India is the country of Gandhi who authored the theory of Satyagraha, and then launched a movement, even a mass movement, that he hoped to ground in the principles of Satyagraha, but we Indian youths do not understand the distinction between 'ideas' and 'action' to obtrude upon his message to the country, and as a consequence the most enduring aspects of Gandhi's thought escape when we go for strike. Gandhi's achievement lay in embracing an 'inclusive' vision, a philosophy devoid of a distinction between the 'Self and the ‘Other’.

Why don’t we intend to improve our country right from the basics? Do anything and everything to help the country improve, become cleaner and better. If we try to participate in development of country, we should join some society in our hometown to fight against corruption, illiteracy poverty or complain against broken roads, lack of basic amenities, so that others can also get inspired and do the same in their hometowns.

Is going for strike the only way India can be improved? We should not consider ourselves weak or powerless. If we are a responsible citizen and a true Indian, then we have the power to make a difference. Strike is not a solution.

We should change ourselves to change the country. - Narayan Prasad - May 19, 2006

The students protest against the suspicious and malign actions of the central government is really commendable. The youths of India is now thinking in the progressive terms and is ready to come out of their shells for good causes. In past, we have seen, the same youth brigade coming out for maha-rallies, laathi-rallies and others which were organized by political groups only for their own motives, to get votes and power. The impression was that, the frustrated, unemployed crowd could gather anywhere for any cause, whether or not related with them. They had been shouting 'ZINDABAD', MURDABAD' mindlessly and the cunning politician were taking undue advantage of the fragile attitude of the youth force. The only inspirations for the youth were caste, community and other regional issues. The then youth have now became a little older and cursing themselves for the deeds they had done. They came to know, although late, that they were acting like puppets whose strings were being controlled by some corrupt politicians.

That sense of deceit has made the new generation more alert and conscious and we are watching first agitation of its kind, which doesn't have any so-called leader. This movement is self-ignited and every person is participating by heart. Every individual attached with this movement is a leader. This may be called the real PEOPLE-AGITATION where no mouthpieces are there. If the same attitude is maintained over all important issues in future, we may see more responsible and honest governance. This is quite clear from the current moves by the central government which has now decided to rethink the reservation policy and increase the number of seats in medical and engineering organizations.

But, here, I would like to caution my young friends, that never underestimate the cunning politicians. They are as cunning as fox and as cruel as lion. They would find some ways to demoralize the agitation. For that, some actions have already been taken. I have watched a news clip that says the Mumbai agitation and laathi-charge was managed by professional event managers. Now, this act may let a section think otherwise. Moreover, government - motivated groups are posing as pro-reservation groups and started coming out on roads in support of the policy. This has been done to ignite clashes and division of the society. I would like to request all the sections of the society to keep their calm. The pro- and anti- reservation voices should be raised, if required, but mutual friendship and brotherhood must be maintained. If the people can keep their cool, it would be a defeat for the ugly game-planners. My best wishes to the writer and the 'RANG DE BASANTI' youth. - Ravish Kumar, Hyderabad - May 19, 2006

In Northeast even the OBC students are rallying against reservation, but in Tamil Nadu, which has 70% reservation in its colleges, the doctors are rallying to support reservation. No doubt they will do this because without reservation these doctors won't have enrolled themselves in medical colleges. Now they support reservation so that their children, grand children although being economically improved will take the ladder of reservation and make easy pass-through and make gimmick to their poor general class neighbors.

I just received a mail from my friend that software professionals around 6000 to 8000 are going for a daylong march from 10 am to 5 pm on 21st May in Pune to protest the reservation.

Truly, youths in India are awakening at the same time I curse Govt as its policy hampering the studies and mindsets of students. Thanks to the summer vacation in the colleges, just realize what will happen once students get back to study. There will be more ghetto and riot like situation throughout the campuses. - Tarakeswar Dubey - May 19, 2006
