Tips as a bonus, rendered to a person once the job is done. The amount of tips varies upon outlook of the environment and quality of service. In posh restaurants, the tips are high and come around 10-15% of total expenses. In some hotels, although the tips are included in the bill, the tips over tips are given as a royal gesture.

No one pays tips to roadside thelawallas, although they serve us cheap delicious foods. The helpers on these thelas are extremely poor and real needy; their job is uncertain and prone to sabotage frequently by municipality, police, and gundas.

Once, my friend while returning from a discotheque in Delhi was saluted by the guard of the car parking area. Then he handed out a note of 50 rupees to the guard as a tip. On receiving the note, the guard gazed with furious eyes towards my friend and murmured abusive words on him. Then he saw the person next to his car offered two notes of Rs. 100 and was poured with “thank you sir” and another couple of salutes.

The Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai, which is famous for delivering Silver Spoon, feed kids; also famous for hefty tips to its security guards and nurses and cleaning staffs. Once, I witnessed a couple with their newly borne baby; while coming out of the hospital were saluted frequently by a security staff. Finally the couple realized the expectations and out of irritation or happiness, they brought out a big bundle of hundred rupees notes and threw it on the security officer. Later, rest of the security staffs; that peeked the incidence remotely; jumped to him and demanded for share.

Some Postmen are prone to tips. With every Money Order and registered letters they bring to your house they expect few tips from you.

In metros, on the eve of Diwali the tips resume chain reaction to cater office peons, security guards, dhobis, sweepers, bearers and so on. One can witness the similar events even more in Western world during Christmas Seasons. In these countries, the tips are dip rooted in the society and is paid even to the bus/taxi drivers and barbers.

To apply for competitive exams, an applicant has to submit attested copies of his certificates notarized by a Gazetted Officer. After attestation, some Gazetted officers expect/demand “Something” from the candidate.

During college days, we suppose to offer Rs. 10 as tips to the clerk after receiving Railway Concession Forms otherwise the answer was “Form is not available” on next occasion.

In Government quarters, few residents pay tips to PWD staffs after repair works are done. The tips are even paid to insurance officials after claiming the Insurance. Some bank officials ask for tips once you are allocated personal or home loans.

While in train journey, if you are waitlisted and got confirmed birth then you are asked tips of not less than three notes of ten rupees by TTE.

The eunuchs pour well wishes to couples in parks, beaches and expect tips from them. The same can be experienced while your car is stopped in red signal or you travel by a train. On offering the tips you will get “duas” and on denial the reaction can be vulgar. Once, in train, the co-passengers suggested better to lend the tips as government or private enterprises don’t employ eunuchs. Deprived of alternatives their livelihood depends on tips only.

Whether tips is good or bad, but it raises expectations on beneficiary’s mindset on subsequent services. It brings favoritism and affects public service and performance varies on amount of tips paid on previous occasions.
