Today
the main news frontpage of BBC carried a story
about a court case regarding the theft of a pair
of oxen that has gone on for 33 years in a
village in Ara ...
Here is how it reads.....
For the past 33 years,
Surajnath Yadav, a farmer in the Indian state of
Bihar, has been going to the local court as an
accused in a case involving the theft of a pair
of oxen in his village.
Forty-six-year-old Yadav is the only survivor of
five villagers accused of stealing a pair of
oxen from a house in Nawada Ben village on 19
June 1973.

The conviction rate in this lawless, dirt-poor
state is as low as 6 to 7%, lawyers say.
Bihar is developing. I appeal to the authorities
to take necessary actions to keep such articles
from appearing in International News front
pages. Some may say that these international
news agencies have an agenda... Agreed, that
some may have, but is the story false ? Isn't a
man running to the courts for the past 33 years
in a case where the four of the five accused are
dead, the accuser is dead, the oxen are dead ?
Is this fair ? Let's put an end to this, the few
ruppees that the legal system earns from this
poor farmer, pales in comparison to the black
eye Bihari prestige gets on the world stage.
