A lot of dark deeds are done by politicians when public attention is diverted in another direction by some major disaster/accident. A situation like that presents a fantastic smoke screen for the politicians to cut underhanded deals and make themselves rich while siphoning public money to their cronies.

So much has happened in the last few years, that to go over all the events, one has to spread the timeframe like a Japanese fan and look at all the events that happened worldwide. Let me focus on a narrow slice that is meaningful to the interests of India.

The nuclear flea-market that was run supposedly by A. Q. Khan was busted up when it was found that the centrifuges being used by Iran were supplied to them by 'the disgraced scientist'. It is said that, single-handedly, A. Q. Khan was responsible for a lot of nuclear proliferation and selling technologies to 'the axis' countries like N. Korea and Iran.

When this ring was busted, A.Q.K was immediately put under house arrest and no one was ever allowed to question him or have access to him. That wasn't surprising. What indeed was surprising, that no one pushed for A.Q.K to be surrendered to the International Community. If anything would have been proper, he should have been treated the same as a war criminal at the Hague at the UN. International Tribunal. Nothing like that ever happened.

Nuclear technology is not sold in this world for a chicken and two goats. We all know that! Anyone who tries to tell me that these things sell cheap, needs a reality check. It is the most sought after technology in this world of ours, where more and more countries see it as a 'must have' to be able to speak up in a man's voice in the International community. An astronomical sum of money would have been transferred over from Iran an Korea for this technology. How can millions of dollars come to an individual in a country and the government still stay in the dark about it? It sure is impossible. If someone tries to convince me that this is possible, then he is spinning yarn like no one I have ever seen.

A. Q. Khan took the blame for the biggest crime of modern times perpetrated by the Musharraf regime. Musharraf, his relatives and his clique of Generals ran the "Bomb Wal Mart" and when it was exposed, they quickly blamed A.Q.K and put him in protective custody. He was even pardoned as he was quoted to be a "national hero" !

Why did the world buy this explanation. Well, if they had insisted on A. Q. Khan to be handed over, A. Q. Khan would simply have refused cooperation by dying mysteriously. Now they'd blame him for that too - saying that he committed suicide! A. Q. K built the Pakistanis their bomb. The Pakistanis in turn, sold their national hero out. So much for their character. And here we are, talking peace, getting bitten, then talking peace again, then getting bitten again... then talking peace yet again.

Wayward separatist elements under influence of this evil neighbor perpetrate crimes against India. We shrug it, and talk of the 'Peace process' that has failed several times before. We refuse to see reality. Our religious leaders need to have a national conference and make sure that they modify their message to be pro-national identity above everything else. Religious attire and media coverage of religious events must be banned gradually. We must propel ourselves to a secular identity, not be carried by the shoves of Pakistani mischief and ever increasing internal disturbances caused by Pakistani influence. Our politicians take the path of least resistance by shaving a growing cancer in a half hearted attempt to keep it from growing.

Comments:
The other day I was watching a program on National Geographic in which they investigated 9/11 in great detail. This program was shown as it was the anniversary of 9/11. What came out loud and clear was that most of the moral and financial support for 9/11 came from Pakistan. Some of the terrorists had trained in Afghanistan and Pakistan prior to procuring US visas. An attack on the scale of 9/11 was not a small event that can go unnoticed by the Government of Pakistan. Close to 3000 American lives were lost. US suffered billions of dollars worth loss of property and unaccountable loss of prestige. The Americans went after the Taliban. The question “Who controlled the Taliban?” was never asked. Perhaps it was the guilt behind creating, training, arming and then dumping the Taliban that weighed heavy on the American leadership’s conscience. The next thing the world hears is that Pakistan has become a key ally in the war against terror. Musharraf & Bush are seen shaking hands as the world watches stupefied. The role of Pakistan in 9/11 was quickly swept under the carpet. If they can pull that off and get away with flying colors they can do anything anywhere. Uncle Sam will always pat their back even if he has to wipe a bloody nose with the other hand. - Rajesh - Sept. 14, 2006

While the US domestic policies make perfect sense, the US foreign policies are sometimes equally irrational. The US domestic policy is driven by long term goals but the foreign polices seem to have short-term goals. The real base of terrorists (Pakistan) is given a free pass and the secular and innocent nation of Iraq was attacked. I think a mix of American arrogance, vested interests from certain minority groups, ignorance about world history or geography and short-term policies cause this. When communism was a real threat to capitalism the US used Pakistan as a base to fight Russia. Islamic Terrorism is hundred times more potent than communism but in their overconfidence and due to vested interests, the American politicians continue to underestimate this problem and play games.

When the bomb created by A. Q. Khan eventually falls into the hands of terrorists all humans will look back in amazement and disbelief that the man who caused the death of hundreds of thousands went scoot free. - Som Vishwakarma, USA - Sept. 15, 2006

Want an estimate of what the Uncle Sam stomached to pat Pakistan's back after 9/11 and to include them as a key ally in the fight against terror? Here are some facts and figures :

Deaths in Tower One : 1,402
Deaths in Tower Two : 614
Bodies found intact : 289
Body parts found :19,858
Number of families who got no remains : 1,717
Number of children who lost a parent : 3,051
Jobs lost : 1,46,100
Estimated amount of insurance paid worldwide : $40.2 billion
Hate crimes : 1,714
Cost of cleanup : $600 million
Time taken to build the towers : 6 years 8 months
Time taken to destroy them : 1 hour 42 minutes
Bystanders killed : 10

The links with Pakistan are proven. Now ask yourselves what was the compulsion of the US leaders that made them stomach all that and you will have an answer to the riddle called Pakistan. You can extend the logic further into the future to get a glimpse of what is coming and what this back pat is going to cost to humanity at large. - Rajesh - Sept. 18, 2006

The writers in their responses to the subject article have highlighted many facts regarding the 9/11 episode and its aftermath but the main crux of the matter has not been touched upon (this I feel because the subject may be a common one but the coverage it has had is really very big) that is why America had not taken any action against Pakistan despite so much damage caused to them.

Please allow me to express my thoughts.

Pakistan is the strongest link of the US in the ASIAN continent, with Pakistan by its side it can have a commendable control over India and strategic control over China. India and China are the emerging economic powers of this century and the US now would like to enrage Pakistan to damage its own political prospects in the international politics.

Also Pakistan is the strongest US ally among the Islamic countries and it has an atom bomb as well, and if they do anything to Pakistan then the Gulf Countries would unite together and US in no manner can penetrate anywhere as they are doing now.

Therefore it is very evident that because of their long term political interest and strategy they could afford to forgo Pakistan's involvement in the 9/11 which caused USD 40 billion damage where as they are controlling trillions of dollars on this part of the world. - Sanjay Gupta - Sept. 22, 2006
