I
would like to draw
your kind attention towards the fact that in
violation of the Section 17 of the Hindu
Marriage Act, 1955 which clearly states “Any
marriage between two Hindus solemnized after the
commencement of this Act is void if at the date
of such marriage either party had a husband or
wife living; and the provisions of sections 494
and 495 of the Indian Penal Code (45 of 1860),
shall apply accordingly” , the Women’s
Commission of Bihar has sanctioned Bollywood
singer Udit Narayan’s bigamy.
It is ironical that Ms Manju Prakash the
chair-person of the commission is showcasing
this as her achievement. She is not above the
law of the land and reconciling two wives of a
husband, even if he is a celebrity, is not only
beyond the jurisdiction of the commission but
also a bad precedent for the future. The
commission is there to protect the rights of the
women and not to break the laws that aim at
safeguarding women’s rights. If such actions on
the part of the commission are ignored, it would
create a bad trend and will send the wrong
message that it is ok with the women’s
commission if a celebrity has more than one
wife.
I, on behalf of numerous other women, request
you to please support action against Ms Manju
Prakash for sanctioning Udit Narayan’s bigamy
and thereby abetting the violation of the Hindu
Marriage Act. She does not have any moral right
to continue to be the chairperson of the Women’s
Commission of Bihar. She should be replaced by
someone who has respect for the laws and the
constitution of India.
If need be please forward this to the
appropriate authority with your powerful
support.

Svetlana is very right in her
comments. Women's commission's
actions agreeing to polygamy by a
celebrity is highly unbecoming and
it is high time that the commission
is filled by persons of high
conviction. - Kumar Delmar -
