Doctor Brides - Perpetuating the Tradition

It was amusing to read that Nalanda Medical College girls performed a mock wedding with the Health Minister, arguing that if their course was extended to one more year, nobody would be ready to marry them because of their age! The medical ground for early marriage is perhaps known, but was this medical ground the only reason of resorting to this argument by future doctors?

Unfortunately, no. It only reflects what a hypocrite society we are- we want girls to become doctors and engineers and what not and yet expect them to also get married early because even if the guys are 35, their family and they would prefer to marry a girl in her early twenties (and with hefty dowry!)

So it basically puts double pressure on the girls, to excel academically and do it as early as possible, because if they didn't, they would not get a decent guy to marry!! And so this arguments by medical girl students.

However, at least medical profession is the most coveted among Bihari girls and their parents, possibly because it is much easier to marry off "doctor" daughters than daughters in any other profession. Otherwise, not so many girls (and guys too, but for other reasons), keep preparing for medical, year after year.

However, by putting forward the argument of marriage, these students are only reinstating and justifying the social belief that it is somehow right to get the girls married off early (not on medical grounds but because they will not get a guy to marry!) and it is right for the guys and their parents to expect their future daughter-in-laws to be a successful professional as well as young!!

Comments:
I completely agree with the Maitheli Singh, such type of behavior shown by the girls student, is just the mirror image of what is going in the society. It is evident society do see the girls mainly for their age and not for the talent. Even if the girl is talented, but if she is little more in the age than what is considered correct age for marriage, they are looked down with the matter of contempt. This should be changed.

This situation also differs from place to place. Just take example of the female living in metros, they usually go and prefer for the marriage only getting settled in life, in carries and they are also expected by most of the males in living in metro. In metro settlement in carrier for a female is as important as that of male so to have better life. The age factor is not the only big factor.

If considering the above fact, it clearly shows that the people think based on the environment and the society in which they are living. Same type of incident did not repeated in the other places. Now its time for us to understand this basic fact that age should not be the only factor, if this is understood by the same people in the very same society then hardly we would be seeing such incident. The pressure is visible on the girls who have not only to deal with pressure of the society but pressure of being well in their carrier and life. - Onkar Nath - Dec. 11, 2007
