Naxals or Just Criminals?

I am fearful to learn that we are yet to solve the problem of insurgency of Naxals in Bihar. Do we know what their grievances and apprehensions are? If killing is what they believe in to solve their problems, then the use of force is necessary to subdue them. Otherwise, the reasonable method is to talk to them. On the contrary, Naxals seem to be the amalgamation of various renegade people that use the name Naxal to take revenge of personal hostility in the guise of political colour. If they have political agenda, they must be reminded that killing of innocent people has never served political purpose throughout the history.

Comments:
Unfortunately the basis of Naxalism is armed struggle. Not only in Bihar but also in Andhra Pradesh and other state, Naxalites use most of the time the violent method to oppose and express themselves. They by means of Naxal guidelines and the ideology use the means which are not peaceful protest.

Today they are called Naxals and before independence such people were called “Krantikari”.

I agree with the author that violence is not going to solve their problem. Here the Government has greater role than anyone else. Understanding their needs and fulfilling them will help bringing them in the mainstream of society. Today they fight for basic facilities and things like education and sanitation in their areas. But also it is fact that some demand can be filled and some cannot. It will be interest of all that, those demands which can be fulfilled must be fulfilled. The missing factor is the trust. They do not trust governance, they do not trust judiciary and they do not consider themselves part of the same society.

If they have to trust the judiciary, they must see that culprits dealt properly within the system and then they need not pick the laws in their hand.

It is no wonder that they are even used for political purpose as author has pointed out. We cannot ignore the fact even they are not seeing their promises getting kept. What started as Telangana struggle as mass of people a movement is still continuing and now it is being used as vote bank to serve the political purpose.

All these things must be changed, to bring the trust in them about the existing system and help them realize that even the existing system can be changed by only being part of system and not from outside. - Onkar Nath - Dec. 16, 2007
