Sarwarjee's
last wish was to see Patna being known as
Azimabad. I want to see his wish fulfilled. The
state government should send a proposal in this
regard to the Centre; thus spoke Lalu Yadav, RJD
Chief and Union Railway Minister at a function
to celebrate the birth anniversary of former
Assembly Speaker and RJD minister Ghulam Sarwar.
Laloo Yadav has many qualities and one of his
biggest assets is his inherent understanding of
mass mentality because of which he ruled the
roost of Bihar politics for almost a decade and
half. No mean achievement from any political
standard. It is this decade and half rule which
made him an over confident arrogant politician
who started thinking that he will keep calling
the shorts of Bihar till the time he draws his
last - remember the slogan - jab tak raheyga
samosey mey aaloo, tab tak raheyga Bihar mey
Laloo.
You believe it or not, but he started believing
it. Over confidence has rarely been kind to
anyone. Lalu Yadav forgot this and now his party
RJD is sitting in opposition. The shameful exit
of Mr. Yadav and company in the last assembly
election has mellowed him down, and at the same
time has frustrated him to the point of
desperation.
When it comes to exploitative politics Lalu
Yadav is genius. He exploited his own people
(socially deprived) in the name of social
empowerment. Oh yes, he gave them power but the
power of hooliganism. The long time oppressed
class found their pride and empowerment through
the medium of hooliganism and with the freedom
to roam around freely in the busy streets of
city with bhains (buffalow) balti (bucket) and
cycle.
He exploited the Muslim community by playing
with their prevailing fears of communal riots.
It’s true that in his fifteen years of regime
there has not been much of communal clashes like
Bhagalpur and Godhra, but besides that nothing
substantial have been done for the community and
the state, and I fail to understand why he boost
so much about it that he didn’t led the communal
clashes happen. What’s the big deal about it;
it’s the duty of the government to provide sense
of security to all its citizens, this is not
something which can be labeled as out of the way
favor to one particular community
He now complains that he gave security and
social empowerment to the minority and down
trodden class and for all this favor his party
is sitting in opposition-so sad. He failed to
realize that realization can struck any time and
when it happens at election time it produces
devastating results for confident candidates.
That's exactly what it did. By voting against
the RJD camp the people of Bihar gave their
message-you fooled us once, shame on you; you
fooled us twice (thrice) shame on us.
Lalu Yadav has been the man who used to
understand mass mentality and now that same mass
has started understanding his rotten mentality
and tunnel vision-A vision in which he sees
himself as the Raja of the Bihar state and his
son Tej Pratap as a would be prince waiting for
his coronation, for now this grand dream has
taken a pause - its temporary or permanent only
time will tell.
After loosing the last assembly election Lalu
Yadav is in melancholy mood and in a state of
depression. To gets his throne back he is
contemplating a coup but unfortunately not much
is coming his way and it is this which is adding
to the frustration, because the longer the
present government stays in power, more damage
can be done to his status by showing the work of
development.
I have no clue why his Sarwarjee suggested
renaming of Patna to Azimabad but like me, I am
sure, everybody else has the clue why Laluji is
suggesting so. He is frustrated at the fact that
his main voter base (The Muslims) has been
eroded; therefore to get them back into his camp
he has started appeasing them (again) assuming
that this is what Muslim needs, i.e.
appeasement.
I doubt Muslims will surrender to this gimmick
of his. I am sure he doubt is as well, but there
shall be no doubt in any one’s mind that he said
it just to appease that mass mentality of Muslim
crowd which can make a difference at ballet box.
It was the Muslim and Yadav combination which
secured his seat for fifteen long years. Yadav’s
are with him, if Muslims again come his way and
with support from others he will get his throne
back.
I wonder why he suggested the renaming of Patna
to Azimabad. What is so special about it. What
is so Muslim about it?
In case if enlightened Laluji is not aware about
the story of Azimabad then for him and for
others concerned I would like to borrow from the
pages of history. It so happened that in the
year 1704 when Prince Muhammed Azim, grand son
of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb was the subeydar of
Patna he requested his grand father (Aurangzeb)
to rename Patna as Azim-ma-bad (Azimabad) the
Emperor Aurangzeb acceded to the request of his
favorite grand son. Point to be noted here is
that other than name, very little changed in
this period.
So, why Azimabad? The answer is obvious.
Lalujee in all these fifteen years much has
changed, and so has the people’s aspiration,
ambition, apprehension and the mentality, since
you failed to respond, so the people responded,
now you please take lessons from it and stop all
these gimmicks if you are really interested in
surviving politically.

Najam bhai,
What you said is perfectly right.
Among various factors what put Bihar
in one of the backward state
categories, is vote bank or vote ki
rajneeti. Lalu Yadav is not a LALLU
when it comes to appeasing Vote Bank
and fooling them. He is been doing
it for 15 years and he wants to try
his TRUMP CARD once again to get
back in power and re-establish his
regime.
In my opinion, we all are Biharis
and Indians and we should think,
talk and act towards development of
our state and, in turn, our country.
Talks like this (changing name of
cities for the sake of vote bank) is
not going to take us anywhere and
there will be no development
whatsoever.
I sincerely hope people of Bihar
will not let this happen and we will
continue on the journey for a
developed Bihar. - Samir Kumar

Dear Najmi,
Very well said. You have written all
which I do want to write. Lalu Yada
is playing with the people of Bihar
especially with the Muslims from
more the a decade and half and still
he want to exploits to make the
issue to change the name of Patna. -

Najam Bhai,
Good Article. Laluji has started
speaking 'Anap Shanap'. I remember
couplet - Jab Nash Manuj Pe Chhata
Hai, Pahle Vivek Mar Jata Hai' (when
destruction comes to a person he
looses his mind first).
He had 15 years to rename Patna
after the grandson of Aurangzeb if
that grandson was so great - he did
not do it. What does he think?
Muslim community does not get it? I
doubt that? People from all sections
are able to see this through. -

Laluji has proved once again that he
is one of his kind. His political
intelligentia is really high class.
The above lines may seem something
awkward and wayward but it is one of
those reasons why Laluji was able to
rule and ruin Bihar for 15 long
years.
Renaming of a city has been a juicy
and meaty idea for the politicians
all over the country. Just provoking
false pride among the citizens and
getting huge support in turn has
been a simple formula for them.
Madras became Chennai, Calcutta
became Kolkata and what not. Nothing
has changed.
The real game of Laluji is to create
a crack between the ruling alliance
that is BJP and JDU. I would explain
the thought step point wise:
1. Laluji proposes to change name of
Patna to Azimabad at all the
possible occasions.
2. His Muslim followers would start
demonstrations, dharna, bandh and
what not turning it into emotional
and religious issue.
3. JDU would be forced to accept the
demand for the sake of saving its
face in front of Muslims.
4. As for BJP, it would accept
everything except a Muslim name for
a city.
5. The ultimate result would be
fraction between BJP and JDU.
6. Laluji would put some hey to the
fire from time to time.
7. Bihar would again become victim
of cheap politics.
I would request the knowledgeable
readers to comment on this analysis.

Well thought and written article..
Some where in the article ,the
author has mentioned that it's
government responsibilities to
protect life and properties of its
citizen and in doing so , government
is not doing any extra favor to
them. But if Lalu says he should be
credited for riots not happening
then what is difference between
elected government and extortionist
(street gunda) who demands
protection money from business
communities or humble civilians. The
only difference between the two is,
gundas demand money and Lalu wants
votes in return. - Ranvijay Sinha

Your article has once again come up
with an acid truth and it's all
right to say that Lalu has just
played with the sentiments of People
of Bihar; rather made them a little
loco in terms of pseudo jobs and
aspirations. As far as protection is
concerned, it's our prerogative to
make demands for it. When we talk of
basic infrastructure, today we
visualise it's almost lost not
because Bihar was deprived of such
basic amenities but it has lost its
glory due to sheer negligence of LPY.
No matter, still we are confident to
make our state rich and beautiful
with our support and cooperation
from all corners and obviously we
all have to stand strong to make it
happen. I am also very much grateful
to all the readers who have given
their valued comments - S. Haider,

Well said!
To the outside world, the state of
Bihar conjures up a picture of
extreme backwardness. Very true.
A charismatic autocrat, he reigns in
the name of his wife, whom he got
elected as the state's chief
minister when forced to quit from
the post a few years ago on
corruption charges. His reign has
also taken all of Bihar back to the
dark ages. A near complete absence
of infrastructure has cut off Bihar
from the national mainstream. Roads,
hospitals, schools - everything is
in a shambles.
Nobody will disagree with the fact
that during Lalu-Rabri’s stint the
State has turned from bad to worse.
Lalu Yadav may fulfill his dream of
ruling for a record time but the
State has already slipped 20 years
down the line. Bihar today is almost
universally accepted as a sore on
the face of the country, acting as a
drag on its development. Name
anything — criminalisation,
corruption, breakdown of the system…
Bihar has a overdose of everything.
I think the people of Bihar are now
aware that whatever happened in the
past shouldn't be continued again
and it's the only result that a
ruling man is no more seen in the
marathon anymore. And to be a
participant he is trying to
influence the people by his thoughts
which all of us know very well,
where he stands and where he wants
to take Us!!. - Syed Azfar

This is really well written article.
Thank you Sir for writing everything
any right minded Bihari will like to
say. The time has changed but still
our politicians want to stick to
their old dirty divisive politics.
They should realize that Bihar which
is the poorest and one of the most
illiterate state have voted for
development. We know what can be
achieved through development. We
also want our share in development.
All Biharis can see that through
development most of the problem can
be eradicated like in Karnataka and
other southern state. We have enough
of social empowerment talk now the
time has come to provide us also
opportunities of growth. Laluji has
fooled us for very long time but he
cannot stop us for seeing what
progress is. These southern states
are burning example in front of us.
We cannot ignore them any more. Here
(I mean in southern state) the
politicians do the politics of
development. All they talk about in
investments new project etc. But our
politicians are still on caste and
communities. But still I believe
that time is changing in Bihar.
People voted this time for
development and given strong message
that Bihar is not fiefdom of
anybody. - Pankaj Kumar Jha, IIT
