A Challenge and an Opportunity

The global meet currently underway in Patna is a laudable initiative undertaken by the Nitish government to showcase Bihar to the many Biharis living abroad, one like me, as a possible investment destination. Whether such efforts would be able to yield results, only time will tell. But the interest and expectations have certainly been raised.

Whenever we discuss Bihar abroad, the first apprehension that comes to our minds is the state of law and order there. It is pointless to assign blame on any particular government for the situation which prevails at this stage, but it is obvious that many of those who are attending the global meet, and many more who are watching the events from afar, are unlikely to be carried away by the promises made in Patna. They will wait to see concrete efforts being made, before they would start 'putting their money' in Bihar.

The present Government might have inherited a difficult situation from its predecessors, which could take a long time to sort out, but something that is in its hands, and which it can do, relates to the speed and efficiency with which the issues are being addressed. Law and order has to be the top priority as that is the factor going to create the maximum confidence abroad. So the Government must send clear signals that lawlessness will no longer be tolerated, and perpetrators of crimes will be dealt with firmly and expeditiously, irrespective of their political and social connections.

The handling of the murder cases of Engineer Satyendra Dubey, Prof. Papiya Ghosh earlier, and those of two engineers yesterday, and many more ones, are being closely watched by the Bihari Diaspora. Let the government mechanism start moving swiftly, and show exemplary resolve in bringing the culprits to book.

No doubt Bihar has to catch up with the rest of country, to raise the investors' confidence. And the sooner we can do it, the better it would be for Bihar's future.

Will the Government bite the bullet or allow another opportunity to pass by?
