It is a matter of great pride for us that Pratibha Patil, the UPA presidential nominee, arriving in Patna appealing to the emotions of Biharis, has highlighted the glory and significance of Bihar that gave birth to democracy in India. Well now, let’s moot over the replacement of the term “President” for a female in the event of her gracing the topmost post.

With the Feminist Movement gripping its strong hold by throwing challenge to patriarchal society, a radical transformation has come about in every field. English feminists have already drawn attention to the fact that male bias is encoded in our linguistic conventions. A few such examples include the use of “man” or “mankind” for human being in general, of “chairman” and “spokesman” for people of either sex, of “he” and “his” to refer to God, human being, child, author, poet etc. It is another thing that in course of time “chairman” has become chairperson.

As for the question what Pratibha Patil, if she becomes India’s first woman President, should be referred to , I think nether "Rastrapati", "Rashtrapatni" (?) nor "Rashtra-aunti"(?) is a suitable substitute of the patriarchal President for a female. "Rashtramaata” is the only honourable epithet for a female President.

What About "Rashtra-Netri" or Rashtra-Maata" or "Rashtra-Devi" or "Rashtra-Rani" or "Rashtra-Nayika?? - Ravish Kumar, Sr. Software Engineer, Hyderabad - July 11, 2007

Rubber-Mohar-Maata. Anyway, no real qualification or talent is required for this post (now). Even if she is a corrupt leader, will not be much harmful to our country. - Anup Anand - July 13, 2007

In the era of ERA, Rashtrapati is o.k. for both genders. - Satya - July 13, 2007

Please don't give her any of these epithets. She does not even deserve the post. The people have not voted for her. Just because she gave a speech (most likely, written by a speech writer) does not mean that she cares for Bihar. - Hansa Sinha - July 16, 2007

We had heard of puppet-dance, puppet-art, puppet-show but with the globalization of everything these arts are using live human beings. The outcome is "PUPPET-PRIME MINISTER", "PUPPET-CHIEF MINISTER", "PUPPER-PRESIDENT" etc.

The best designation for her would be "Rashtra-Putli". - Ravish Kumar, Sr. Software Engineer, Hyderabad - July 17, 2007
