I like PatnaDaily as it brings interesting news related to Bihar/Patna where I once studied. Recently, reading the news on Patna Daily - It is so surprising to see so many politicians throwing Iftar party, one after another - Ram Vilas Paswan, Nitish Kumar, Lalu Yadav, Congress politicians - Sadanand Singh, Jagannath Mishra, and on and on... with such a fervor... what are they trying to do?

I haven't seen these laughable cheap politicians throw Christmas party, Diwali party or Vijaya Dashmi party with the same spirit. From my Hindu friends in Bihar, I have heard that many Hindus do 9 days fasting during Dussehra and eat only after dawn (note: they eat only one time after dawn, not eat as many time like others). They break their fasting on the last day of Dussehra/Durga Puja. Why these cheap (so called Hindu politicians) not throw party for Hindus who break their fasting at the end of Dussehra Puja. Do they not think that Hindus and Christians are their vote bank too? Is it that these politicians think that they can only fool some but not the others?

I am really sad to see these politicians treating and fooling people so shamelessly, and then they dare to ask NRI's to send money and invest to improve the condition of Bihar? As long these guys will keep playing these cheap stunts, smart hardworking NRI's will have hard time trusting these cheap politicians, forget about sending their hard earned money in their hand.

Miriam,

This is in response to your comments about treatment of women in Islam. It is good to hear that some Muslim women are not being mistreated, however that doesn't represent the facts out there for other Muslim women in the world. You live in the comforts of the west created by non-Muslims, enjoy the modern life style created by non-Muslims, and then you think that all Muslim women live the same life in other parts of the world dominated by fundamentalist Muslims? (You should first be indebted to the non-Muslims for offering you a comfortable world and community, and then you should have some sensitivity for unfortunate fellow Muslim women who are suffering in Islamic communities around the world today. By saying Muslim women are not being mistreated in Muslim community is like turning a blind eye to the real problem).

Please keep in mind that the world is not concerned about the so-called moderate Muslims like you living in west, but the extremist form of Islam (or criminal Muslims as recognized by CARE) that has been doing most damage to the civilized world. The so called purist Muslims (Muslim fundamentalists) don't even recognize Muslims like you. Purist extremist Muslims consider moderate Muslims like you - corrupt Muslims of the world, and enemy of Islam.

You haven't responded (or conveniently dodged) to the suggestions made by one of the writers that why you so called moderate Muslims haven't gone to preach to extremist criminal Muslims - such as Taliban infested Pakistan or Afghanistan to teach them about moderate Islam. You mentioned that you moderate Muslims are majority in number - then why not preach these criminal elements into following your style? Answer is clear that you are scared for your life and not serious about correcting the problem with Islam. Your so-called majority in number is nothing if they (criminal Muslims) run the show, dominate the Muslim world and especially consider your type of moderate Muslims worthless! - Ronkin Nasa - Oct. 22, 2007

Dear Miriam Hoda, with due respect, it is hard to believe that Hinduism was imposed on Bengal. Perhaps, you are ignorant of the historical reality or the writers who provided such fabricated story is suffering with prejudice.

Hinduism as such is no religion and this name is offered to us by Arabians; who pronounce the river “Sindhu” as “Hindu” and thus the people leaving on the lands of Sindhu are Hindus. So, if we go with this definition then every individual of this country is Hindu.

In our religious books such as Ramayana and Mahabharata, you don’t find a single world called Hindu and neither there is mention of other religions as at that time no other religion visible in entire vicinity, so no competition with outsiders. Thus in our religious books the Heroes as well as Villains were following same God. The so-called Hinduism is natural religion of India. The Hindus worship Sun, Tree, River, Animal, Soil, Air, Fire, Stones and everything Natural. Buddhism appeared many years later and is off shoot of Hinduism as Buddha was born as a Hindu prince and he pushed forward the spiritual messages of Mankind in the name of Buddhism.

So, it is hard to digest that people in Bengal were forcibly converted from Buddhism to Hinduism; because in reality the early mankind of Indian subcontinent borne with Hinduism and later many of them have followed the preaching of Buddha.

Now, I can answer you: How followers of Buddhism included back to Hindu fold, if it is true? The Hindus included Buddha as another incarnation of their God and thus all followers of Buddha; by default included in Hinduism. And let me tell you; this is beauty of Hinduism; its flexibility and openness. There is no forced rule therefore it has survived all the historical avalanches whereas other ancient religions of similar era diminished.

Hinduism is a very complex religion as it divided into Caste system based on someone’s profession; e.g. Teachers are Brahmin; Warriors are Chhatriya; Businessman are Vaisya and their low level supporting staffs are Shudra. Again these castes are divided into many sub-castes. Thus, this religion cannot be forced on others; because to convert a person to Hinduism you need to associate that guy with Particular caste; which is simply difficult to imply. So, I feel sorry for the Author who fabricated such story with his prejudiced mindset.

Again Hinduism is open enough to bypass and update its odds. If you refer the history; Hinduism has already rectified odds in manifolds such as: caste based discrepancies; child marriages; dowry system; Sati-daah etc and still fighting on backlogs. But, similar action is not visible from Islam; where they prefer rather to go backward. e.g. recently, the highly educated PhD holders engineers and doctors of your community from Bangalore tried to Bomb London airport.

Let me also tell you Hindus don’t think Islam as a different religion as they visit the Mosques and Majars too as if it is their own Temple. But, by bombing our festivals, Temples and resisting our celebrations; the hard-line Muslims force us to think differently. Experts say, the recent Bombing of Ajmer-Sharif was because of Amalgamation of Muslims and Hindus in this Dargah which the hardliners don’t want to digest. The extremists cannot digest this flexibility and they want every person to enter in Dargah should strictly be converted into Islam. - Parshuram - Oct. 22, 2007

[Note to all: This topic has veered off to 'my-religion-is-better-than-yours; or your-religion-is-inferior-to-other-religions'. Please stick to the topic - Iftar in Indian politics. Thank you.]

In my opinion there is no need for other (non-Muslims) including non-Muslim political leaders in India to celebrate Iftar party when each year so many terrorist criminal acts are committed in India and around the world by Muslims – which are mainly directed towards non-Muslims. What is the point in doing so called iftar party with Muslims when their hands are tainted with blood of innocent non-Muslims? I agree that terrorist criminal Muslims give bad name to all Muslims, however it is then the job of the so-called moderate Muslims to control the criminal elements in an effective way (not by just doing the lip service of denunciation) and create a world free of such mindless terrorist acts against non-Muslims. Once the Muslims have regained trust of other non-Muslims then only should the non-Muslims celebrate a true Iftar with Muslims. If political leaders continue to fake the Iftari stunts then the true problem with Muslim terrorism and killing of innocent non-Muslims will never be solved.

I was busy celebrating Durga Puja, and I loved it so much as it celebrates victory over terrorism and mindless violence perpetrated by demons against peace loving people. Indian history and culture has produced many role models who preach non-violence, Hinduism doesn’t reward mindless terrorism and violence (as perpetrated by demonic Ravan in Hindu's religious Ramayan). Buddha, Jain, Mahatma Gandhi are good role models for all. It is nice to hear about the United Nation's declaration of October 2 (Gandhi’s Birthday) as the World Non-Violence Day in honor of Mahatma Gandhi as a testimony to the human's natural desire to live in peace and harmony.

Regarding the spread of Islam in Bangladesh, I totally disagree with Miriam that Bangladeshi’s welcomed Islam with open arms. It was only the weaker, poorer, desperate sections of the society who fell victim to the Muslim invaders’ trickery, threat and coercion. It has been true all over the world (not only in historic Bangladesh) that mainly the weaker sections of the society had been coerced, tricked and threatened into converting to Islam. We all know that weaker sections are so desperate that they always hope that the new comers will offer them a better life – but in retrospect these weaker sections of Bangladeshi who converted to Islam actually fell from frying pan to fire. Just look at the facts - today Bangladeshi Muslims are poorer – and so desperate to get out of their so called Islamic Bangladesh that they even prefer to go begging in neighboring non-Islamic India. So what good was done by Islam? Actually most of the developed and developing countries happen to be non-Islamic. Islam has been known to make their republic - bankrupt, people- a failure, and country - a worst place to live (check out so many muslim African countries). Look at what the hardline Islamic Taliban’s did to Afghanistan when they came to power. - Salena Das - Oct. 27, 2007
