Mr. Shashi Uttam of PatnaDaily.Com deserves appreciation on the clarity of photographs coming up in the news everyday. A. N. College, Patna I could observe the only institution in Bihar which celebrated Earth Day among the rest of the universities of Bihar. I appreciate NSS wing for its active participation in this endeavor.

The point which I would like to make - why April 22? What is the purpose of Earth Day, and how did it start?

I have not seen any function on 22nd April in Ontario when ozone depletion is at its climax and people are taking all protective measures in this direction.

The credit of Earth Day foundation goes to senator Mr. Gaylord Nelson who wanted to put the environment into the political “limelight” and 20 million people of America demonstrated their support. This was a remarkable happening in the history of democracy on April 22,1970. He spoke on environmental issues to a variety of audience in some 25 states. All across the country, evidence of environmental degradation was appearing everywhere and every one noticed except the political establishment. The environmental issue simply was not to be found on the nation’s political agenda. The people were concerned, but the politicians were not. After President Kennedy’s intervention in the summer of 1969 during anti-Vietnam demonstration, a grassroots protest took place on environment also. Nelson’s planning on Earth Day was to show the political leadership of the nation and there was broad and deep support for the environment.
