Move to
Appoint an Internal Security Minister

India is
perhaps facing the toughest challenge on
internal security since Independence.
It is obvious that the strictest of
administrative measures have to be adopted to
deal with the situation effectively with an iron
hand.
There are talks to create a post of Minister of
State, Internal Security and the idea is very
feasible because there has been precedence in
the past (even from Pandit Nehru's time). It is
also true that Home Minister Shivraj Patil
cannot be held singularly responsible for the
current or earlier terror attack situations.
Some of the intelligence agencies are under him
on paper but report to the PMO. There are two
ministers of state, namely Shakeel Ahmed and S.
P. Jaiswal who are his subordinates. They too
cannot absolve themselves of responsibility.
So the move will certainly cope with the need of
the hour and the person should be an experienced
one, someone who commands respect, knows how
intelligence, defense and police forces work,
knows the criminals and their ways, and is adept
in taking tough decisions any time. This person
has to be above political and personal gains but
has to have national interests on top of his/her
mind.
Someone like Mr. Nikhil Kumar, currently Lok
Sabha MP from Aurangabad; who has been Special
Secretary, Internal Security, India, and has
been the chief of the elite NSG besides serving
in the BSF and as Delhi police chief. He not
only has had an exemplary service record but
also inherits a strong political will of
unimpeachable integrity which is essential to
handling the job with perfection. Going for a
non-political figure, former Top Cop Kiran Bedi
also has the competence to deal with the job.
She perfectly knows the job, is erudite and can
take tough decisions, without having to worry
about political implications.
We hope the government will wake up at least
this time and will make a sensible decision and
put such a citizen for this post.
