Communal Harmony all but Gone!

Memories normally become hazy with time but one everlasting memory of my childhood days becomes sharper in my mind's eye with passing time. It is the image of bearded Muslim men with gulal smeared over their faces singing Holi songs with the rest of the crowd in my village. Eid is a festival when Hindus of my village still visit their Muslim friends to eat sewai with them. Even to this day deep in my village, where politicians have not been able to spread their vote bank politics, the situation remains much the same. People of all communities still mix freely and treat each other with warmth and friendship.

Today when I hear of attacks on other communities I ask myself where all this will lead to. If you plant hate you can not harvest good feelings or respect. Whether it was the "appeasement policy" of the Congress or the "politics of hate" unleashed by the BJP, the undisputed victim has been our social fabric. Even today we find them fighting tooth and nail for votes on most TV channels. They keep accusing the other of using even this delicate time for vote politics when, by criticizing others, they themselves are eyeing votes. It looks horrible. Where will these selfish people lead us to? The present situation is a result of their greed. What kind of future do they have in store for us?

It is high time all political parties of India unite to say sorry for what they have done to our society, promise never to mix religion with politics again and allow the wounds they have inflicted to heal. If this is not done neighbouring countries will keep interfering and using Indians against India.

Comments:
I am from Patna but living in Germany since 1968. Europeans fought several wars with neighbors for hundred of years. But they united after the second world war. Today, Europe is a very peaceful and promising continent, in spite of diversities.

We in India must teach our selves that our future lies if we live in harmony and have respect for each other. After all, we are all the same breed. Religion must be limited and must be treated a private affair. Should we fail in creating a different society, we will have no progress and peace of mind. Religion has many draw backs too. - Khursheed Jamil - Sept. 19, 2008
