By Air
Patna is the state capital and a convenient air passage for touring through
the state. Patna airport is approximately 125 km. from Bodhgaya and 90 km.
from Nalanda.
Patna has air connections
with Delhi, Calcutta, Lucknow, Ranchi, and Kathmandu, Nepal. There is plenty
of public transportation available at the
airport. Please call your travel agent or the airport authorities
for flight schedule. By Rail
Patna is a very well connected city with all major stations from
the
north, central and west directly connected to
it. Amritsar, Calcutta, Delhi,
Bombay, Guahati all have direct connections to Patna. Traveling by train,
though cumbersome in most cases, is worth experiencing. Make sure to have
advanced reservations and then just enjoy the trip. As the train passes
through different towns, you meet different people, vendors, etc. and very
soon you realize that the fellow travelers are not only friendly, but
extremely helpful also.
By Road
Patna is connected by road to Bodhgaya, Nalanda, Rajgir, Varanasi, Gorakhpur.
It is 125 km. Bodhgaya, 90 km. from Nalanda, 100 km. from Rajgir, 190 km.
from Bodhgaya (via Rajgir), 250 km. from Varanasi and 653 km. from Calcutta.
Unless you've traveled by
State Transport buses in India before, this may be an interesting first
experience.
There are regular buses
between Patna and Bodhgaya, Nalanda, Calcutta, Siliguri (for Darjeeling) and
Varanasi.
City transport
Taxis: Un-metered taxis are available at all
major hotels. Tourist Taxis available with the Transport Unit of Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation, Paryatan
Bhawan, Birchand Patel Marg; and ITDC’s Ashok Travels & Tours, Hotel Pataliputra
Ashok, Birchand Patel Path.
Buses: Bihar State Road Transport Corporation operates the city bus services. Privately owned mini buses also ply city roads.
Other means of
transportation: Auto-rickshaws, cycle rickshaws, tongas (rates to be fixed before start of journey).
