Patna: Arun Kumar Singh, a native of Buxar, has been appointed the new Indian ambassador to the United States of America, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a press release on Sunday.

Singh, a 1979-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer currently serving as the Indian ambassador to France, is to take place of S. Jaishankar who was named the Foreign Secretary by the Narendra Modi administration earlier this year.

A product of Patna's St. Michael's High School, 59-year old Singh is expected to take up his assignment next month. He had earlier served in Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan as the Joint Secretary in-charge and as Indian consul in the former Soviet Union, Ethiopia, Japan and Israel. He also worked as a counselor in the United Nations between 1993 and 1997.

Singh's father was an engineer in the Irrigation Department while his younger brother Arvind Kumar Singh is an IAS officer. He has a younger sister who works in the Audits and Accountant services.
