Patna: Patna University teacher Prof. Ravindra Kumar Sinha, also known as India's 'Dolphin Man', on Wednesday was honored by the members of the Patna University Teachers' Association (PUTA) for recently been awarded the coveted Padmashree Award.

Sinha, who heads the Zoology Department of the Patna University, recanted his experience during his early days of involvement in saving the Gangetic dolphins saying no one took him seriously when he declared the rare dolphins on the verge of extinction several years ago.

"They did not take me seriously and showed hesitance in granting fund to carry out research work on the dolphins that are found only in the Ganges. However, I was able to convince the government with my hard work, dedication, and research papers," Dr. Sinha said.

Ruing lack of research facilities in Indian universities as available in western countries, the Padmashree Award recipient said that more funding was needed to carry out research work in many aquatic and oceanic areas in order to conserve the environment.

Patna University Vice Chancellor Dr. Y. C. Simhadri and other academicians were present on the occasion.
